Definition: Busker "To play music or perform entertainment in a public place, usually while soliciting money." Earlier, "to be an itinerant performer, probably from busk, to go about seeking, cruise as a pirate, perhaps from obsolete French busquer, to prowl, from Italian buscare, to prowl, or Spanish buscar, to seek from Old Spanish boscar". busker n.

BuskerFest 2005 is four days of mind boggling, non-stop performances from around the world featuring: The USA Breakdancers, authentic breakdancing; Squid, drum corps; Pedro Tochas, sculptor clown; Co-Existance, acrobalance and balloon act; Matty Blade, sword swallower; The Paraffinalien, fire performer; The Handsome Little Devils song, dance and juggling act; Peter Rabbit, percussion; Pete Sweet, rope-walking, jazz singing wild man; Kromatik, make-up and body painter; OKA, electronic beats, vocals, exotic woodwinds and world percussion; Green Fools, stilts, puppets and masks; The Jim Show, physical comedy, juggling and balancing; Sylvain Dubious, cyclist extraordinaire.

And from Toronto's own backyard, home-grown Street Stars include: Mysterion the Mentalist, a mind reader who communicates with the dead; Pane The Puppeteer, a unique one-man musical marionette show; Silly People, free-style comedy, balloons, juggling and circus skills; The Twisted Ones, World Champion Balloon Artists; Victor Fraser, Chalk Artist; Darren Bedford, on stilts/unicycle; Warren Toaze-Maz, with table magic; Michael Carl O'Neil, as Charlie Chaplin; Pete Jarvis, Statue; Maracatu Nunca Antes, afro-brazilian percussion and performance troupe; Trampulin, highflying trampoline act; Silke Henke, Clown WorkshopÅ

Along with the street performances, there is more fun to be had and sights to be seen such as BuskerSkool where kids of all ages can learn the art of magic, stilt walking, unicycle riding, clowning, juggling and more. Also new this year, a kids area which will include Charlie and Little Fingers music workshop and storytelling. Drop by the St. Lawrence Market Beer Tent overlooking the Culinary Stage on Market Street, featuring foods and chefs from the Historic St. Lawrence Neighbourhood and when the sun goes down, the night lights up with dazzling fire performances and bawdy burlesque.

BuskerFest 2005 supports Epilepsy Toronto, which was founded in 1956, and is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of independence and optimal quality of life for all people with epilepsy and their families. The association provides support services, information, advocacy and public education.
