2025 NDP Federal Leadership Race

I was just looking at the list of their remaining MPs and I don't think I've heard of any of them. Maybe Rachel Notley? Or Naheed Nenshi? Or their one MP in Quebec?

Yes, if here French is good enough.

Or Naheed Nenshi?

He just replaced Notley as leader of the Alberta NDP.... so he's out. He's running for Premier in a couple of years.

Or their one MP in Quebec?

I haven't heard him speak in English, but certainly he has some stock just for getting them a seat there.

Given the small size of the NDP caucus, I wouldn't be surprised to see candidates from outside the federal party, including MPPs/MLAs in the provincial parties, or maybe even city politics.

In 2003, a nationally unknown Riverdale city councillor ended up winning the leadership race, John (Jack) Gilbert Layton.

At this point the NDP disastrous result have proven that they can't even make enough dent into Parliament Hill...they better have a good leader who can spearhead the party ideologies. Same with Bloc Quebecois!

Maybe the most sitting-member buzz seems to be about Heather McPherson, who represents Notley's old Edmontonian provincial turf. And I can picture Leah Gazan running as a spokesperson for the "urban left"...

I was hoping for Matthew Green, but his seat got wiped out in this past election.

I believe that the retiring Charlie Angus left some thoughtful ideas and discussion points in his substack linked below.

Reading through the substack and looking at how Liberal MP Bruce Fanjoy did the groundwork in Carleton and unseated former member of parliament Pierre Poilievre can be a clue as to how the NDP can rebound.

All signs point to McPherson running.

A “Draft Heather” website launched last week. She’s also popped up at a lot of GTA events lately, including Toronto Pride, to boost her profile.

Would love to know more about her but her website seems uninterested in providing that information.
...outside of stating she supports a 2 state solution on the Palestine question, nothing else really says she'll be the NDP's Mamdani moment. /sigh

At this point, the NDP needs to kidnap Wab Kinew from Winnipeg. Only politicians today that could come close to Jack Layton's aura. His french his excellent and this country is over due for a first Prime Minister of First Nations descent

Also, Mark Carney will open a lot of eyes - younger generations are already starting to acknowledging the thing as their US counterpart - Conservatives/Liberals are just as much a "uniparty" as Democrats/Republican.

Enjoy 4 years of austerity and more trickle down economy policies
