2003 Municipal Election: Mikes campaign.

Well I thought I would just let you guys know how my campaign is going.

Due to my age, and the fact that I am not spending tons of money on signs and fancy flyers. I am probably not going to win.

And I knew I would probably not win.

Anyway it is still a great learning expirence.

Yesterday night I had to do my speech infront of the Bendale Community. All the cadidates did their speeches.

I was very worried that my speech was bad and crap, and all that. However my speech turned out to be the best of all the speeches.

However I got a kind of vibe from the audience, that they wished I was a little older. Many residents came up to me and told me that I was great, and that I was goign to be a somebody with the city. And that if I did not win this time, to please run again.
So that atleast made me feel good. That people atleast saw my ideas.

My speech though swept the audience. We had five min to do our speeches. The other cadidates went up there and filled most of the time with thanking people for attending and stupid stuff like that. And how lucky we are to vote.
Two of the candidates went up there and just listed off how they worked for the current city councillor, and how you should vote for them, because they have a letter from the current city councillor saying they are hard workers.

Then I got up there, and listed all my goals for the community if elected. I got right in there and just got down to what I wanted done in this ward. And people liked it. They were nodding yes alot. My speech I think talked about the basic issues they see in our ward. I said "people are standing in mud at our main intersections, waiting for buses". I made points like "why are the buses leaving two min before the commuter trains arrive at the station".

And I think things like that really got people to see I have vision and know the issues.

But I am only 21.

The guy who is probably going to win, who's name is Glen. He is the one putting out all the fancy signs. So while this speech was only infront of one community in our ward. His signs are reaching to all areas. So for the thousands of people not at the meeting, they are going to vote on who they see more signs of, probably.

Anyway at the end of the question session last night. Glen got hammered by a resident, who brought up a bunch of corruption charges that Glen is being investigated for.

The same resident told us latter that Glen just moved into our ward, to run in our ward, because the ward he lives in knows all the corruption stuff and would not vote for him.

So this will be interesting. If Glen does not get it. Then Virgina will I think. Although she was like a wooden pupid. And would not give proper answers. And would always relate everything back to good old Brad our current councillor. And how he liked her.

A hearting thing happened though. One of the guys running against me. He so admired the fact I was running. He heard my speech, and was taken back. He actually wished me very good luck after the question session, and kinda made it known that if he did not get in, he would like me to. So that was nice of him.

The other two cadidates were good. But they made some weird comments and did not have strong ideas either. One of them said the city needs more low income housing. But her words were "Not in our ward though. We have enough low income housing. Let them build it somewhere else".
She said this after saying she wanted 20% more low income housing or something in the city.

I really was the only one who listed local issues to resolve.

But I still won't win.

Yes. ;)
I tend to get involved in all elections -- love 'em.
Of course, there is that day job thing.
And going to the gym every once in a while.
But I try to find at least a couple of weekends - AT LEAST - during an election to volunteer my time.

Way to go though Mike. If I lived in your hood, you would have my vote.

Hey -- you've stuck you neck out on the chopping block -- that's gutsy.
And - no doubt - you're learning lessons now at a young age. Apply these lessons again and again, and I bet you'll win!

Most people are - for good reason- scared to run.

Hauling your ass out of bed to knock on doors, knowing that it's a hard battle, up and down huge driveways, getting to front porches with huge dogs, having doors slammed in your face, and then doing it house after house, day after day ( Well, that's the PC experience I've had volunteering --- never mind running!) wow - - well done!

That's your name on the ballot. And even if people aren't putting a "x" beside it this time, and it's easy to take it personally ( how can you not? It's your name!) DON'T TAKE IT PERSONALLY if you don't win. THEY'LL PUT AN X BESIDE YOUR NAME NEXT TIME !

You've learnt while you're young. There's no house with a mortgage and a wife wondering what the hell you're doing or where you've misplaced you brains, etc.

Congratulations for giving it a shot! (Which sounds pathetic, but-- really - you lot more guts and courage than I have)

C'mon Mike! If you had announced that here I'm sure some of the people from the forum would have showed up to support you!

We can be the Mike Binetti goon squad! Jeering and catcalling at all the other candidates. Oh, and applauding at every word you say like at a George Bush speech.

Michael,

Be a good candidate and share your beautiful election flyer
with the rest of the board! ;)

BTW; the best time to knock down campaign sings is 2 - 3 in the morning. But you didn't hear this from me. :p

All the best Mike (FYI did you read today's Sun? They did a profile of all the wards but only mentioned your name in passing. Methinks your age handicap is coming into play. Regardless this is a good learning experience, and a chance for people to hear your message.)

Way to go man. Just stay optimistic, and you'll be surprised how many votes you'll get.

Congraulations Mike on making the impressions that you have made despite your shortcomings. I'm sure that in that audience in which you made your speech at least some people were astonished, perhaps embarrassed, that your straightforward, common-sense approach to real-life issue beat those of more experienced candidates. Remembering the Star article you posted before it really shows how your lack of age and fame can hurt, but some words for the wise - a true future leader is one that does not play politics, and I think you're one of the few honest-to-goodness candidates nowdays who doesn't dwell on flashy advertisements or celebrity status or an overall "cool" attitude, but truthfully focusses on what is good for the community. But on the other hand you can't blame the average public for not reading up on candidates outside of handy flyers, so I suggest that the money put forth to publicity is worth it. Anyways feel proud of your campaign even if it meant nothing more than simply increasing your recognition for the future, and I hope the best in your politicial career now and in the future.
