6 levels deep. Look at the size of the excavator and the sections of temp stair tower for scale.

Who knows why.... But if you look at the pictures the sequence of activity on the site points to digging the middle while leaving the north and south sides alone until all of a sudden there is activity and movement on the City Centre and Burnhamthorpe sides of the site.

Looks like a builder pushing hard to get to the bottom of the hole while waiting for a shoring permit to me...
