The seemingly terminal decline of Tim Hortons

Meh. If a person has some kind of dietary restriction, ethical, physical or otherwise, going into a fast food restaurant that has an essentially fixed menu won't be for them. Pizza restaurants - real ones that make pizzas on-site from scratch - will either accommodate you or not. Their...

    PM Justin Trudeau's Canada

True for 'new money' ownership but there is a lot of old money family vacation properties. The ones I know I would hardly call "elite". Vacation country extends well beyond Muskoka into areas that are quite accessible by the average, non-elite taxpayer. People who have gone into significant...

    PM Justin Trudeau's Canada

Any federal exercise of its residual power under Section 91 would be heavily litigated by the provinces. Keep in mind that the section reads: It shall be lawful for the Queen, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate and House of Commons, to make Laws for the Peace, Order, and good...

The seemingly terminal decline of Tim Hortons

I see nothing being "made" at a Tim's site. It will be factory made, frozen then 'finished' at the restaurant.

    Ontario Northland/Northern Ontario Transportation

The one thing I agree with is the lack of a stop at Beaverton. I would trade Washago for Beaverton.

    General railway discussions

The statement was "First Nations issues" which I took with a broader definition than money going to individuals. Federal government program spending is about $25Bn (not including what the provinces spend) but I don't know if that includes negotiated or imposed settlement amounts. In light of...

    PM Justin Trudeau's Canada

An odd line item for a budget. Like most other proposed Bills that show the government of the day is 'taking X seriously', many of proposed new offences are already covered by existing criminal law. Theft + violence = Robbery Links to organized crime - already in there Proceeds of crime -...

That'll buff right out. Coming to a budget carrier near you.

    The Coming Disruption of Transport

https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/a29838406/2021-ford-mustang-mach-e-fake-engine-noise/ Already happening. What's missing is the grassroots 'shade tree' mechanic element. https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/a29838406/2021-ford-mustang-mach-e-fake-engine-noise/ And that would be sad for...

    Toronto Pearson International Airport

To be clear, the federal government owns the land. I don't know how much, if any, infrastructure they own. Much or all of the property that existed when it was a federal airport is long gone. Even if it is just the land, the price tag would be steep, and how they would divvy up the property...

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

This thread seemed like a reasonable spot to drop this. Poorly trained and inexperienced transport drivers coupled with a lack of enforcement inspections are a creating a hazard on the highways. Who knew...

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

That's called debating, but you don't strengthen your position by running off on tangents or grasping at straws. A staked out position stands on its own merits - or not.

    Toronto Pearson International Airport

Unless they can get the landlord (government) to pony up, I would expect it to be a combination of fees and debt. The presser really just sounds like it is in relation to the airport property and operations itself. Assuming any proposed transit hub would be off-property, any talk about it...

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

Then just make that argument and move on. When you get into the weeds of all the places a train can stop for passengers, when they clearly can't, or people commuting 400km, then your posts go all to hell. The biggest metric for the return of the Northlander is the political one, and I think a...

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

I gotta stop doing this. Either that or start a map so I can keep track of where the goalpost have been moved to.

    The Coming Disruption of Transport

Great analysis. One thing some of the zealots don't get - the ones who want to turn all the taps off now' - is we need this economy to get to the next one. We can't grow 34 million tons of wheat in a greenhouse.

    General railway discussions

Yes we do and yes they are. Your point? We put them there and there is a difference between self-governing and self-sustaining. Many have little to no economic potential.

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

Ok. Between Parry Sound and Sudbury (ish) the n/b (w/b) VIA runs on CP; s/b (e/b) runs on CN. Alban and Key River are kinda-sorta near one of the lines, PauB is on CP and nowhere near CN, so I guess they could leave but not get home (or visa-versa) provided they could get to where the tracks...
