    YRT/Viva Construction Thread (Rapidways, Terminals)

I'm not sure who would think that 6 trains per week is an upgrade over several buses per day. Make sure to ask people in North York, Vaughan, Barrie and Orillia, all fairly important stops that the train did not make. The train was comfortable, yeah. The bus is faster, more reliable, more...

    Toronto Bike Share

It's about a 20 minute bike ride downhill and 25 minutes uphill. Anyhow, the appeal of this probably is to get some revenue from people who park there, then ride down and often back up, paying for at least a day pass. It's not meant to connect with the rest of Eglinton because of the hills --...

    TTC: Streetcar Network

They haven't confirmed anything yet, beyond the existence of the switches that'll let them run more service in the underground section. In any case, there's no reason why they can't run high frequencies in the surface sections. The LRVs are going to be following regular traffic signals, just...

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

The issue isn't that residents would have to pay. The issue is that there's only enough spaces in the east and west ends for the cars that have permits. If you add shoppers into the mix, some of the local residents will be left with nowhere to park except in the middle of the night. We did...

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

The parking rates don't matter. The point is that with on-street parking it's a lot easier to leave your car, walk into a store briefly, and walk back out to your car. If people have to go use a garage several blocks away, most of the time they just won't bother. If the city is getting rid of...

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

Off-street parking and on-street parking have completely different uses. People go to off-street parking -- especially garages -- if they need to leave their car for several hours. Someone who's just stopping in to have dinner or buy a few things isn't going to go looking for a garage and drive...

North York City Centre (Yonge & Sheppard)

They're basically convenience stores with a pharmacy, and private label products too. They can be profitable just about anywhere.

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

Rosedale Valley has a multi-use trail from Bayview up to Park Road. A better solution would just be to build a connection to the Lower Don Trail that's 250 meters away, and to the Riverdale Park bridge.

    Toronto Ontario Line 3 | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

Single bore and smaller trains. Toronto has absurdly wide subway trains, which is definitely a big driver of the high cost of subway expansions here. Most cities in Europe use smaller and much shorter trains, single bore tunnels and side platforms (not to mention that their stations aren't as...

Good journalism costs money. If you want good journalism, pay for it. If nobody pays for it, the paywalls are just a way of getting used to the world after we kill all the proper news outlets.

    Metrolinx: Presto Fare Card

Who in the world would give the gift of Presto?

    TTC: Other Items (catch all)

Of course not. In Toronto we drink whiskey from a coke bottle instead.

    Toronto Ontario Line 3 | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

The original line was always going to be Islington - Warden. This is probably the only case in the city's history where a multi-phase transit project actually had all three phases built as planned -- the first two ended up being combined into one, and the third started construction before the...

    Toronto Ontario Line 3 | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

This isn't really true. Line 2 has only been extended once, by one station in either direction (and this was arguably just a part of the ICTS projects in Scarborough and Etobicoke). Line 1 is more complicated -- the Union - St George extension was done as a part of the Bloor-Danforth project...

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

The city isn't rebuilding the main roads as part of the Regent Park project.

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

There's some TTC policy that requires two traffic/parking lanes when streetcars run in mixed traffic. It makes bike lanes impossible on Dundas, Gerrard and Parliament. They were added on Shuter and River.

Madrid. Similar area, slightly larger population (3.3 million vs. 2.7 million), and their bike infrastructure is pretty comparable to what we have here in Toronto.

    TTC: Other Items (catch all)

So.... we do the exact same thing that we do everywhere else in the city. If you live on Harbord Street, you still have a bus if you can't walk up to Bloor, but the bus isn't as fast or as frequent. Same thing if you live on Yonge Street north of Eglinton, or on Sheppard between Yonge and Don...

    TTC: Other Items (catch all)

Good? King and Queen are three blocks apart. If streetcars run much faster on King then people should be encouraged to make the short walk south.

    TTC: Other Items (catch all)

The 508 makes a lot more sense now than it did three years ago. Streetcars move faster on King than Queen, and more capacity is needed on King during rush hour. Same story with the 503 compared to the 502.
