  1. Strange Advance

    Toronto Union Park | 303.33m | 71s | Oxford Properties | Hariri Pontarini

I'm the first to defend Toronto architecture, most of which I find not worthy of all the condemnation it evokes (Toronto is all about utilitarian, not fancy), but there's nothing in Toronto nearly as nice as, say, 40 Wall St. or 70 Pine St., or Woolworth or GE, or ESB and Chrysler. And...
  2. Strange Advance

    Toronto 1 Eglinton Square | 158.8m | 46s | KingSett Capital | BDP Quadrangle

Anecdotally, Hillcrest Mall is quite busy, while Promenade, which is larger, is moribund.
  3. Strange Advance

    Toronto 191 College | 166.76m | 45s | Unix + York | 17|21

Wow, the floorplan looks terribly crowded. And 3 elevators? The staircase is going to look like the CN Tower during the annual charity climb.

I may be all alone in this, but I do not like the visually irrational 71-storey curved-glass thing in the render, nor the geometric garbage at Hudson Yards (posted by Maldive). At least the original towers made some sense compositionally:

    Toronto Pinnacle One Yonge | 351.85m | 106s | Pinnacle | Hariri Pontarini

Looks so lonely up there. Hope to see the market revived so that Phases 3, 4, and 5 materialize before we have all popped our clogs.

    Toronto 1 Eglinton Square | 158.8m | 46s | KingSett Capital | BDP Quadrangle

We live in a strange world. To me, a condo community built atop a mall that already has (or could easily get) every amenity one could want or need in one place is logical. Most malls are on the decline, yet "luxe" malls like Yorkdale are busier than ever.

    Toronto 1 Eglinton Square | 158.8m | 46s | KingSett Capital | BDP Quadrangle

I agree. It makes a whole lot of common sense to build condo towers atop existing malls. If traditional malls are dying, adding hundreds of residents should revive them.
  8. Strange Advance

    Toronto The Pemberton | 215.79m | 68s | Pemberton | a—A

It took a coon's age for anything to happen here, and now it's really moving.
  9. Strange Advance

    Toronto Pinnacle One Yonge | 351.85m | 106s | Pinnacle | Hariri Pontarini

I haven't been following the film industry much anymore. Does Toronto still have a substantial film industry? I remember the '90s, when it was "Hollywood North".
  10. Strange Advance

    Toronto No. 31 Condos | 153.63m | 46s | Lanterra | Arquitectonica

"No. 31." A downright prosaic name like that does absolutely nothing to inspire interest or confidence. Matter of fact, this is the first time I have ever looked at this thread, though I have scrolled past it before. I should have done so again.

Unbeknownst to kotsy, "Kotze" means vomit in German, so that often springs to mind for me, as much as I appreciate his pics.
  12. Strange Advance

Toronto Pinnacle One Yonge South Block | 296m | 85s | Pinnacle | Hariri Pontarini

There certainly are people who would much rather live in downtown Toronto, in a skyscraper, with a nice southern view of the lake, than in a suburban SFH, but 400-500 sq. ft. is barely enough room for one person, much less two or more people, and unrealistic PSFs must come down for this to have...
  13. Strange Advance

    Toronto Pinnacle One Yonge | 351.85m | 106s | Pinnacle | Hariri Pontarini

Ugh, AI! But I doubt AI would produce a low-res render that looks like it's from 2003.
  14. Strange Advance

Toronto Pinnacle One Yonge South Block | 296m | 85s | Pinnacle | Hariri Pontarini

Pinnacle should resize the units and include a good chunk of rental, in my mostly uninformed opinion. Almost nobody wants 400-500 sq ft investor cubbyholes. Those days are over. People need and want living space, especially when they're paying 800 Grand and up. If you're a family of four...
  15. Strange Advance

    Toronto Forma | 308m | 84s | Great Gulf | Gehry Partners

Skyscrapers are not a sine qua non of great cities. Many great cities have very few. I happen to be a skyscraper aficionado, but I don't agree that they are an essential feature of urbanity.
  16. Strange Advance

    Toronto Sugar Wharf Condominiums (Phase 2) | 283.6m | 85s | Menkes | a—A

The endless blue-and-grey homogeneity of facades is depressing, but my main disinclination is to skyscrapers with purely flat glass exteriors (curtain wall) with no variety. To me, almost anything that breaks up the monotony of plain glass is a welcome feature, including balconies. These Phase...

Is our friend Contra around to do up a progress diagram for us? ;)

^Love the perspective on the first shot.

    Toronto Forma | 308m | 84s | Great Gulf | Gehry Partners

Thanks, I did not remember that. It wasn't much of a height increase though, was it?

I surmise C-Mac was thinking of Uptown Residences, which I was, too.
