Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

Excuse my ignorance of track engineering, but if hypothetically a bunch of switches are added to the section between, say Peterborough and Ottawa, to allow small towns to access the mainline, wouldn't this add a ton of maintenance complexity to the part of the line that needs to remain at top...

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

Open up the departures page for Pearson and Bill Bishop, CTRL+F and search for "Ottawa" or "Montreal". There's your answer. The business model already exists today, this nonsense about "moving up to 2 hours away" is either because you're massively overthinking this or twisting reality into a...

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

My assumption is he would do what Doug Ford did with Wynne's renewable energy projects: cancel them and attribute the massive costs of litigating and settling them to his political enemies. If by some chance he chose to keep the project, he'd probably employ the "shared sacrifice for the...

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

Thank you, I started googling when the cameras started rolling but they must post these things with tight timing. I find "The project’s total estimated cost is greater than the current federal deficit" a little misleading and is definitely a bit "big number scary!" move, it's not like that cost...

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

Is anyone else watching Poilievre's conference in Peterborough at the moment? It's a bit schizophrenic with the logic - he simultaneously is calling the project too slow, comparing it to construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway that constructed a railway over wide-open recently conquered...

Homelessness on the TTC (catch all)

I think it’s important to note that using a gun to disable a person in psychosis holding a deadly weapon wasn’t the issue in the Sammy Yatim case, it was the officer’s decision to subsequently execute him as he lay on his back, with a second round of shots. If I, a civilian, was cornered in a...

    Billy Bishop Airport Expansion?

If Metrolinx wasn't such a joke, we'd have the Lakeshore West lines up to modern standards by now, then the "A Line" in Hamilton could get you to the airport from across much of the GTA with just two seats.

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

Almost the entire 401 right of way is abutted by farmland they'd have to buy from framers lol Such a boneheaded comment by our premier. Any change to the corridor just moves the cone of angry rural people from one area to another, you'll still need to buy up vaste corridors of land to get in...

    Hamilton: General Service Discussion

The one thing fascinating thing I've noticed from the angry people on Facebook ranting about the LRT plans is that a lot of people seem to genuinely like the HSR. Not that Hamilton is some transit-loving paradise, I think many people have a positive nostalgic view of using the bus when they were...

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

Based on the boomer memes I’ve see on Facebook about oil prices this week, if Alto simply renames to “Alto High Speed Bitumen Pipeline”, apparently huge swathes of rural Canada would have zero problem with their land expropriated and dug up!

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

You think the people of Madoc view a train they'll never ride as public transportation?

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

Here comes the CPC attack dogs. Ryan Williams is now stating that Alto will be 300% over budget, citing the Ottawa LRT. I questioned him on Facebook and essentially his argument seems to be that CN is forced to transport too much oil, so if we build a new pipeline to the East coast, CN will be...

    Hamilton Hamilton Line B LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

What are the odds we'll be plagued with the same buggy Alstom Citadis vehicles, given Ontario seems to be totally addicted to them? I'd love to see something new in Ontario with a robust bogie design, like a modern Škoda, at least to show we learn and adapt versus throwing good money after bad...

    Finch West Line 6 LRT

European trams have signal priority that interfaces with other public transit, but of course nothing from anywhere else can work in our that special unique snowflake, Toronto!

    TTC: Streetcar Network

You’re totally right. People will gaslight you from their keyboards, but no reasonable person with a job feels safe in transit surrounded by mentally ill druggies. If Air Canada had a policy that they let drunks from the airport bar stumble onto whatever planes they want without a ticket and...

    Finch West Line 6 LRT

Do you fly regularly? I think you're really missing just how cheap some people are. People are willing to do all manner of insane baggage nonsense to avoid paying a few bucks for a checked bag. Hell I kid you not, there was a guy in front of me going through security tonight at Pearson with a...

    TTC: Streetcar Network

If Toronto really wants to cut down on all the wire gore, then it certainly would be a nice middle ground to have a small battery so that loops and diversions could be unpowered. Oh come on, should I post that awful viral video of an LNG bus tipping over in a shop and killing 3 workers and then...

    Finch West Line 6 LRT

What do you mean, you don't like running across three 400 series highways to get to your warehouse job? 😅

    Finch West Line 6 LRT

To add, something like 1 in 6 workers in the GTA work in the Pearson Economic Zone. People often think airport = passengers, but the reality is the airport is surrounded by employers that are not well served by rapid transit. I do wager nothing will be done until Pearson's transit hub is finalized.

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

From the 2023 CPC Policy Declaration still held on their website's governing documents: 66. Passenger Rail We support rail infrastructure across Canada, including innovative high-speed passenger rail where warranted. This would ease conflicts between passenger and freight trains, reduce highway...
