Is there any work being done on the HFR project beyond the contracts issued to Arup and Systra? I know progress is glacial but I'm now looking at as a soon to be engineering graduate.

Makes sense! I had thought that CP had left sold the north shore route and left Ottawa when they abandoned the Waltham and Maniwaki Subdivisions.

Does anybody know if the Alstom bid could include former Bombardier designs such as omneo or twindexx? I'm surprised Siemens and Stadler have been eliminated. Perhaps delivery times?

It is worth nitpicking though; that was an exam question for a class on economic geography I took last year. This model was used as the basis for much of that field's development in the 80s but it's lack of consideration of physical and human/political boundaries severely limit its utility in...

Seems like the best solution would be to just make sure that the new chargers are equipped with sanders. Wikipedia states that one of the modifications of the SC44 model to make the ALC42 model is larger sand tanks so I assume that they are available. Hopefully VIA chose to buy them.

Would be keeping up the tradition of buying whatever was too old to be used in the states... *cough* *cough* HEP2

Will the corridor HEP cars be sent to the non-corridor fleet then?

Does anybody know if the stainless corridor refurbishment is still ongoing or if it's been canceled in expectation of the new fleet? There's multiple mixed refurbished and unrefurbished stainless trains leaving the Montreal station now. Doesn't seem to make sense to configure l continue the...

They look a bit darker in person. I've ridden on them a few times over the summer between Ottawa and Montreal. Same interior as the renovated LRC coaches but a bit larger and boxier. They still seem to be using the old bogies because the grinding sounds around sharp corners haven't gone away

I don't want to be too negative about this project, but I don't think that it will generate much traffic beyond shipments between Europe and central/western Canada. Rio Tinto is currently spending a few hundred million to expand their port in La Baie that they use to supply bauxite to the...

It's still going to be a over a hundred kilometers short from the iron railways. The Arcelor railway terminates at Port-Cartier while the IOC run line terminates in Sept-Iles. The majority of the export tonnage is currently sent along the IOC run line (QNSL) given that Arcelor is not allowing...

An article in LaPresse suggests that they are looking to access Dolbeau from Abitibi by reactivating the line from Lebel-sur-Quévillon to Chaplais and the former NTR. Specific reference to sending trains from Manitoba to Baie-Comeau...

I don't quite understand why any emergency couplers or a wye could be needed? The train sets could just act as single reversible units or be combined together using the janney couplings at the fronts of the locomotives and cab cars.

I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else yet. Looks like they're 4200hp given that the Amtrak SC-44s have 4400hp while the Brightline SC-40s have 4000hp. Not sure why though.

I would assume that the another benefit of semi-permanent couplings is increased lateral and longitudinal rigidity , but that would depend on the specific design and is almost certainly less important than the operational benefits of standardized couplers.

My disappointment with the travel time was largely because I did not realize how dismal the current speeds are for the current VIA train between London and Kitchener. I had through that it would take about one hour to make the journey without realizing that it seems to be at an average speed of...

https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2021/09/15/go-train-service-to-extend-to-london-with-stops-in-stratford-st-marys.html Looks like via is getting some very slow but cheaper competition between London and Toronto. Timings aren't very attractive with an early departure from London and a late...

It's just not. Only feasible way to get significantly better Gatineau-Montreal transit is as part of improved Ottawa-Montreal transit *with* improvements to Ottawa-Gatineau transit.
