    VIA Rail

My issue lies with the assumption that VIA staff will be helping to transport the baggage. I have never seen this on VIA or any European rail operator. On every train journey I have ever taken this was the sole responsibility of the passenger to handle their own baggage and ensure that they can...

    VIA Rail

Turns out via will just kick you off if your bag is over 50lbs. They pulled out a scale well after the train has started boarding (15 minute after scheduled departure with no delay updates as usual) and told a fellow they would just cancel his ticket because it’s 3lbs over 50lbs. Absolutely...

Scrapping has continued with an LRC east of the Glen Fraser gone as well. Cars are parked with doors open letting snow inside. Turns out the split venture set was a regular 5 car with the engine removed.

I didn’t see any signs but wasn’t looking, just passing on the REM and noticed at the last moment to get a photo, may take a better look tomorrow. Surprised they were being scrapped on site but I guess it makes sense if they have yard space.

I didn’t get a photo of the full decoupled venture set but it had at least four cars.

Just spotted some Ren cars getting scrapped in the Montreal maintenance center.

Honestly I haven’t rode an LRC since pre covid either but I was very disappointed when they started replacing the old tan seats. I’ve only had ventures since covid and the rare HEP2 or ren set before they were retired.

Train 26 is confirmed a 5 car double ended HEP2 set. It has one unrefurbished car with the old red seats! I haven’t seen these since pre-Covid and thought they all gone ! Much more comfortable than the newer seats of the refurbished cars and all seats have a window!

    VIA Rail

I believe it is a 5 car / 1 engine train with one business car unstaffed. That was what happened with train 50 today. I misinterpreted the train car.info site. Will amend my prior post.

    VIA Rail

Train 50 from Toronto to Ottawa was another 5 car HEP2 set. It had one business class car blocked until Ottawa and hence showed up as a 4 car set on train car.info

    VIA Rail

I just learned that the HEP2 set from train 33 turns into train 47 and continues to Toronto. Train 26, the return HEP2 journey back from Ottawa to Quebec at ~2pm must be a different set with the same 2business 3economy configuration. From looking at traincar.info, it seems that later in the...

    VIA Rail

I’m surprised it’s just one car removed, I thought it would be at two to make a 7 car venture as discussed prior. This train doesn’t seem like the worst to shorten as I believe it only cycles Montreal-Ottawa once a day as the first train out of Montreal and last from Ottawa. Would be nice if it...

    VIA Rail

I only noticed it the second announcement it seemed particularly uninspired. I may be recalling wrong but I think it was just “VIA Rail recognizes the traditional territories its trains operate in.” Not as lame as the Victorian railways prerecorded land acknowledgements but IMO if something is...

    VIA Rail

Seems like via has added an HEP2 set back to the QC-MTL-OTW during the venture reconfiguration changes. I’m currently on train 33 and it is made up of 5 HEP2 cars and double ended engines. They even reversed the train direction in Montreal like with the ventures instead of backing out to the...

    VIA Rail

Makes much more sense than a shunt worry. just didn’t recall it from when I was previously using the route weekly while estimating lost time to slowdowns yesterday. Would still make sense to be grade separated but I only recall stopping there once or twice.

    VIA Rail

Via trains area still slowing down to 70 at the diamond between the Alexandria sub and CP near De Beaujeu despite this not being a CN interaction. Seems like a very strange consistent additional delay to add on if not at a crossing.

    VIA Rail

I can find it now that you pointed it out but didn’t see it when booking on Saturday, I only learned of the delay when boarding hadn’t started by 8:55 but only direct communication I received was the 9am departure was updated on the departure board to 9:26 at 8:58. Not a big complaint, just...

    VIA Rail

This still seems to be an issue even though there’s been no info to travelers. I’m currently on train 33 from Montreal to Ottawa. Just left Coteaux at 10:30, rather late, and immediately accelerated up to 130km/h after being stuck at 70-90km/h since Montreal. I only found of the delays here...

It is if the government insists on using a investment financing model with the infra bank project, which gets to why the NDP isn't happy. Whether that makes sense is the bigger question you opened.

    VIA Rail

I don't think there's any costed plans but spending a billion to make a new alignment from Peterborough to Smith Falls at 300km/h vs 200km/h sounds plausible. Especially given that the original alignment of the Havelock sub wasn't 200km/h ready as I believe was discussed a while back in this...
