GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Have a look here... I went back in this thread and started reading at page #400 which was mid-2018. Amazing what has progressed since then, and what hasn't. https://urbantoronto.ca/news/2018/08/plans-expanding-agincourt-go-station-submitted-city.33523 Two months tomorrow is.... Groundhog Day...

    Toronto Ontario Line 3 | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

@nfitz - True….but as I understand it, the TBMs are capable of passing thru a pre-excavated station void. There is no need to wait until after the tbm has passed to finish the badic box of a station. - Paul

    Toronto Ontario Line 3 | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

Good question.... I guess it depends on what needs to be delivered, and whether it can come thru the tunnel (once the TBM has passed) or has to be lowered thru a hole in the roof. The biggest thing that I can think of are escalator or elevator components, and I have no idea how those are...

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

If it matters, the latest Carney Cabinet shuffle moves the Transport portfolio to House Leader Steven MacKinnon. - Paul

Perhaps not, but once they pour the station box.....what stands in the way of backfill ? - Paul

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Removal of the Kennedy station second platform and double track, and the Mount Joy tail track, makes me suspect they have descoped the Stouffville line altogether. If the West Highland bridge is years away, no need for anything to be done urgently at Scarborough Jct.... although I agree it'x...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

This is why we don't believe you, Metrolinx.... and why we save your old documents, so we know when you have descoped things without announcing it. Procurement on Georgetown Station - not until 2027. Looks like Danforth Station is also set for procurement but not until late 2027. What does...

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

The report doesn't add much to what we know about the project, but its form is encouraging as it clearly is structured with an eye to a commercialised future.... I don't know how much is pro forma based on Treasury Board guidelines for reporting, but it reads like a document that a Bay Street...

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

The “trope” lies in believing that money and assets and commercial opportunity can simply be seized or redirected at the blink of a poster’s wishes. I happen to agree with you that the railways have excessive room to chase their own self interest ahead of meeting a variety of public goals...

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

We can debate ideologies all day and night, but what is most helpful to this particular forum is how one might realistically change the status quo in the context of our current legal regime and regulatory environment, without assuming a continental transformative revolution that clearly isn't...

    Toronto Eglinton Line 5 | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

Can't imagine that the Minister would make that announcement without a bunch of others present, but we will see. - Paul

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

I would not describe this as "personal retirement growth" ie wealth. Sure, some investors may be rich guys getting richer, but more institutional and fund based investment pays to average people who are scraping together enough to afford some form of retirement and hope to live comfortably, if...

Guess you don't have RRSP's or contribute to a pension plan. Have a look at who owns CN and CPKC. A lot of people effectively buy groceries with their dividends. - Paul

    Metrolinx: Other Items (catch all)

Here I am, grinding my axe again, this time with a hint of support from the Supreme Court of Canada. The question would be, if private investors have this level of transparency around their personal investments.... why would the taxpayer not be entitled to a comparable level of legal...

    Barrie Collingwood Railway (BCRY)

My source says that cranes are on order and they will be offloaded in 2-3 weeks. - Paul

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

Well, no. We are talking about rearranging a 220-mile corridor in our densest region versus a network of thousands of miles of line. There's no reason to nationalise (at a futile cost) just to get that. But maybe a regional rearrangement might be affordable. - Paul

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

I won't repeat all that has been discussed here before - but you might read up on the Collenette report, not because it's spectacular but because it's the most recent discussion of HSR west of Toronto. Collenette did propose various HSR routings west from Toronto. Mostly what he achieved was -...

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

Peterborough is fortunate that a) it sits on a little used rail line that is suitable for HSR and b) it has a history of political advocacy towards being on a passenger train. It doesn't really contribute many seats to either provincial or federal representation, so really isn't a prize for the...

    GO 2.0 Expansion Plan

We have a whole thread devoted to that theme, so I won't repeat it all. You can read up if interested. But yes, Tory's plan to execute ST was plain stupid from the start, and after being shown that it was ill advised he then went through hoops to save face by salvaging something he could claim...

    Barrie Collingwood Railway (BCRY)

Not untruthful, and certainly very much in the loop about things BCR, but perhaps connecting the dots a bit incorrectly. One bit I was told is that the units are being unloaded up there. That part makes sense if for no other reason than who would pay demurrage on six flat cars from now till...
