    Toronto 10 St Mary | 197.73m | 60s | Mattamy Homes | a—A

The same could be said about any building anywhere. Architecture is, in part, a creative profession. There's an art to it, one that practitioners refine, develop, and advance over the course of their careers. aA's work, at least visually, appears to have stagnated.
  2. junctionist

    Toronto 10 St Mary | 197.73m | 60s | Mattamy Homes | a—A

It's really surprising to see how little growth and development there has been in term's of aA's designs over the past decade. They used to be considered the most sophisticated firm in the city when it came to condo design.

    Old City Hall Proposals

It’s hard to believe how lousy the public realm is around Old City Hall. Montreal’s public realm around its historic landmarks is much better. The public spaces around Quebec’s provincial legislature are better maintained than Queen’s Park as well. Yes, we need more philanthropists donating to...

    Toronto Ontario Line: Moss Park Station | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | HDR

They're probably older, but it's the same principle. The foundations they uncovered at Moss Park might date back to the impressive British empire :) I wish we'd allow our city to have a sense of history and culture by displaying finds like these ones in our public spaces.

    Toronto Ontario Line: Moss Park Station | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | HDR

It would be nice to preserve and incorporate the findings into the station somehow (e.g. with a glass floor in an outdoor plaza).

    Toronto The Campbell | 47.24m | 14s | TAS | Teeple Architects

They should have used the gold-coloured metal cladding (at sidewalk level) on the tower. It harmonizes with the brick far better than the grey metal cladding. At least they got the details right at sidewalk level, though. I despise buildings where the sidewalk-level design feels like an...

    Toronto Concord Canada House | 231.97m | 74s | Concord Adex | Arcadis

Great Gulf could show them a thing or two about building signature towers, e.g. One Bloor East, 12 Bonnycastle Street (Monde), or Forma.

    Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

That wouldn’t eliminate the potential for accidents with pedestrians or the need to slow at intersections to reduce the likelihood of accidents with vehicles. But it would be a good interim measure.

    Toronto Q Tower | 197.4m | 59s | Lifetime | Wallman Architects

Failing to deliver on larger units and underwhelming architecture (marketed as outstanding architecture) make this project seem quite unfortunate from a civic standpoint. It's too mediocre for its prominent position in the skyline.

    Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

If the surface-level portion of the line doesn't perform well, they should just start tunnelling again and extend the subway part east to Kennedy. Let the surface LRT handle 5-10 years of usage during the construction, and then turn it into a landscaped median. Alternatively, run a...

    Car free Niagara Falls

They really need to work on the connection between the intercity railway station and the tourist sites. But I should note that in the summer, you can take your bike on the GO train and bike to the tourist sites if you want to be carfree.

    Toronto 87 Ethel Avenue | 109.65m | 34s | iKore | Turner Fleischer

A huge improvement over the bizarre previous iteration, but the amount of spandrel panels doesn't look promising.

    Toronto The Well | 174.03m | 46s | RioCan | Hariri Pontarini

I can't help but wonder if it'll be converted into an indoor mall one day. That happened to a few outdoor malls in Toronto's history, like Cloverdale Mall.

    Vaughan VMC South Block B4 | 102.75m | 20s | SmartCentres | 3XN

Despite the interesting profiles of the buildings and massing, it looks so monotonous. It desperately needs changes in colour from building to building.

Roads: Ambassador & Gordie Howe Bridges

With the Niagara bridges, I don't believe that profitability is a driving factor. If one bridge mainly absorbs excess traffic at peak times, the government is still effectively fulfilling its mandate of making the crossing efficient for the sake of livability, productivity and trade. I'm not...

    Toronto 17 St Andrew | 23.15m | 5s | Impressions Group | Z Square

Why not? It makes the facade less monotonous.

    Hamilton Hamilton Line B LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

Considering the billions of dollars spent by the provincial and federal governments to subsidize the auto industry, it's good to have something to protect the transit industry. Sometimes, I wonder if the provincial and federal governments are serious about transit, walking, and cycling when they...

Toronto New Park at 229 Richmond West | ?m | ?s | City of Toronto | Gow Hastings

It's strange and disappointing that the existing space shows how successful large off-street patios can be as public spaces, yet the project destroys one without any replacement patio or restaurant space. I get that patio space would be a private use in a public space, but it's normal to have...

    Yonge-Dundas Square/Sankofa Square (Brown + Storey Architects)

The city should have a national or provincial commission similar to Ottawa's National Capital Commission to deal with cultural matters like this one and to upgrade and maintain the public realm of our streets, parks, and squares in provincially and nationally significant parts of the city. No...

    Toronto Quay House | 73.15m | 21s | Empire | Kirkor

How can you not be? Why would they use it if no one wanted it? Everyone knows that grey finishes are the best thing since sliced bread.
