    VIA Rail

Oh I totally agree that Via should really be pushing the "we have space to move around instead of being squished in a tin can" angle now. I'm just saying that when they started doing the in-seat service back then, it was the fashionable thing to do because airlines were doing it, and the service...

    VIA Rail

I wonder if some of it had to do with "that's how airlines do it", and they wanted to make it feel like Via was more of a luxury service (since at that time, flying was still seen as sophisticated). A lot of airline posters from the 60s and 70s show a nicely-dressed stewardess serving a family...

    Ottawa Transit Developments

Agreed. I kind of suspected they were going to go that route. When you look at all of the Confederation Line signage, particularly locations where the (1) is shown, they all leave room for additional icons. The one thing I would change is I would have flipped the 1 and 3 in the west end. I...

    VIA Rail

Could the doors not be placed on the intermediate level instead of the lower level? That would line up with the high platforms, would it not? Bi-levels are certainly intriguing, but they would make food and drink service a fair bit more complicated.

My preferred solution is just to have a single car DMU shuttle that goes back and forth across the river every 15 mins or so. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission already maintains it (and the other bridges over the Niagara River, with the exception of the Peace Bridge), so have that existing...

    Toronto Union Station Revitalization | ?m | ?s | City of Toronto | NORR

That would be really handy. Back in the day when I drove downtown for Jays games instead of taking GO (going somewhere afterwards, etc), the TPA lot was my go-to choice for parking. If the weather was nice walking along Front wasn't an issue, but if it was a crappy day the route involved...

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Just looking at the roof line and layout of the new platform at Kennedy Station, it looks as if it has been designed so that it can be mirrored behind it (the roof on the back side just abruptly ends). I wonder if that's some future-proofing in the event that they can use the SRT ROW once it's...

Roads: Highway 401 Widening - Highway 8 to Highway 410 (MTO, U/C, Planned)

Is the work that's taking place on the 401 between the 403/410 and 427 going to extend the HOV lanes eastward? Or are they still going to begin west of the 410?

Sheppard Line 4 Subway Extension (Proposed)

I think it would make more sense to interline in such a way that goes south instead of north. Trains are being short-turned on the Spadina extension anyway, so why not have every 2nd train at Wilson head north to Vaughan, and the other head east along Sheppard? Passengers heading westbound east...

    Transit Fantasy Maps

Agreed. If you're looking for more coverage, maybe run it up Dufferin to Dupont, and then west in/under/over the Midtown corridor?

Not really comparable, because those areas of Brooklyn were earmarked for development. The Greenbelt should remain just that - green. Not every metre of frontage of a rapid transit line needs to have condo towers next to it in order to be effective.

Roads: Highway 401 Widening - Highway 8 to Highway 410 (MTO, U/C, Planned)

For urban areas, I agree. But for rural stretches these widenings are needed, in no small part due to the volume of truck traffic this corridor carries.

The Future of City-Owned Golf Courses in Toronto

Would the sale of those two properties for development possibly offset a decent portion of the cost of the Rail Deck Park? Granted there may be some flood plain issues with parts of those properties, but I'm sure there's some developable land there. Master Plan both areas with the flood plain...

    Ottawa Transit Developments

The section over the Portage Bridge and into the Sparks St tunnel would need to be funded by the Feds though. Ontario and Ottawa residents sure as heck won't pay for it, and I can't imagine the optics of Quebec residents paying for infrastructure in Ontario would go over too well politically...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

For what it's worth, I'd like to see a similar arrangement with the Niagara service (terminating at either Aldershot or Burlington), and the Bowmanville extension (terminating at either Oshawa or Whitby, depending on where that line would join the LSE corridor). I think the system is so...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

I actually envision the Bolton service terminating at Mount Dennis instead. That way it's not contingent on the Midtown Line being freed up, and it would operate completely independently of any Metrolinx-owned tracks. With Mount Dennis being a UPX and future RER station, it would be a pretty...

    Roads: GTA West Corridor—Highway 413

Yes, that is what I was suggesting. There would be a short concurrency between the N-S and the E-W route, but besides that I think it's pretty straight forward. As for the same road changing names along its route, the Queensway in Ottawa is from Kanata to Orleans, and has both the 417 and...

    Roads: GTA West Corridor—Highway 413

Agreed. One number for the N-S highway, and another for the E-W highway (including the new Hwy 7 to Guelph).

    Toronto Eglinton Line 5 Crosstown West Extension | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

There would certainly need to be safety standards put in place to prevent the two from running in the same direction in close proximity to each other. My thought was more to maintain continuity for longer, more regional GO services. Express buses to Pearson and such. But yes, you're right.

    Ottawa Transit Developments

Good point. I wonder if it was done that way because the capital works are essentially an upgrade of an existing line, and not building a new line from scratch.
