rob ford is certainly an oaf, but again, there's an element of grandstanding -- a sort of breathlessness -- that is introduced into the debate by mentions of Mussolini (or for that matter, his famous ally).

the popularity of this rob ford character undoubtedly has a touch of that "silent majority"-type xenophobia to it, but this sort of shrill moral grandstanding reads like a right-winger's parody of the left.

just as a side note, canadians absolutely retain the right to say things like the following (which are the opposite of my personal views, but that's not important): "i feel that my race has qualities which elevate it above all the others." or "it would be better if nobody were gay." these...

i can't even believe ford is in it. from an outsider's perspective (i live in montreal), he just doesn't mesh with the toronto i know. he's a red-faced, stammering drunk-uncle-at-the-cookout. he's an oaf. i'd expect him to be mayor of some suburb of jacksonville, not toronto.

i can think of a fair few anglo-montreal writers who might beg to differ.

the above pronunciations are terribly british; i would suspect their lingering influence here (which is even kind of suspect in itself, as i never hear them) is due to the post-colonial class complex, where certain canadians might feel a need to "elevate" themselves by consciously choosing...
