a brave and articulate attempt to turn a weakness into a strength.

    Rob Ford's Toronto

jesus christ you guys, rob ford is not going to get assassinated.

    Toronto's Obsession With Diversity?

rob ford is certainly an oaf, but again, there's an element of grandstanding -- a sort of breathlessness -- that is introduced into the debate by mentions of Mussolini (or for that matter, his famous ally).

    Toronto's Obsession With Diversity?

the popularity of this rob ford character undoubtedly has a touch of that "silent majority"-type xenophobia to it, but this sort of shrill moral grandstanding reads like a right-winger's parody of the left.

Rob Ford - Why the Supervillian?

i didn't say they could truthfully say it, or that the claim would have any merit -- just that you're allowed to physically mouth the words.

Rob Ford - Why the Supervillian?

i did not claim that the private environment of this board had to be tolerant of such remarks, only stated that they are legal in the canadian public sphere. surely, though, calling for the banning of someone who has listed two comments as rhetorical examples, and who has totally and completely...

    The Toronto Accent(s)

    "alas" indeed.

Rob Ford - Why the Supervillian?

just as a side note, canadians absolutely retain the right to say things like the following (which are the opposite of my personal views, but that's not important): "i feel that my race has qualities which elevate it above all the others." or "it would be better if nobody were gay." these...

Rob Ford - Why the Supervillian?

i can see that peoples passions are running rather high over all this.

    Anyone but Ford for Mayor

i can't even believe ford is in it. from an outsider's perspective (i live in montreal), he just doesn't mesh with the toronto i know. he's a red-faced, stammering drunk-uncle-at-the-cookout. he's an oaf. i'd expect him to be mayor of some suburb of jacksonville, not toronto.

    Toronto's Obsession With Diversity?

i can think of a fair few anglo-montreal writers who might beg to differ.

    The Toronto Accent(s)

the above pronunciations are terribly british; i would suspect their lingering influence here (which is even kind of suspect in itself, as i never hear them) is due to the post-colonial class complex, where certain canadians might feel a need to "elevate" themselves by consciously choosing...

    Toronto's Obsession With Diversity?

i agree. as you have spoken in an ambiguous (rather than a laudatory) way about diversity it is now evident to all that you are a detestable bigot of the lowest order.

25 ways to help make this the city it wants to be

you've got me wrong, and you won't be able to find a quote to say otherwise. i love toronto. i'm about burying the damned hatchet.

25 ways to help make this the city it wants to be

haha... served with a backhand. it never ends.

Rob Ford - Why the Supervillian?

this guy doesn't seem like someone who would come out of toronto. he's just one of these red-faced, drunk-uncley oafs, isn't he?

    The Ascendancy of Toronto

i guess thanos is one of those kind of doom-and-gloomy ex-montrealers. you see them in the comments pages of online newspapers a lot.

    The Ascendancy of Toronto

this is certainly the talk in certain quarters, but, you know, it's not 1993 anymore.
  19. K

Rob Ford - Why the Supervillian?

how fast can you run? (i bet it's really really fast!)

the above is not really a very accurate portrayal of french in quebec. it might have been in 1987.
