    TTC: Other Items (catch all)

I was biking along Richmond the other days, and saw where they were replacing some track, and I had the thought that it would be great if they put in working one-way track on Richmond and Adelaide between Bathurst and Parliament. Put in stops at major intersections that say "service during...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

In the last few days, I've seen people marking spots where the bollards go. You'll notice pink dots on the grounds where I presume they're gong to install them. Though it does seem like it's taking unusually long for this, seeing as they managed to rearrange all the lanes and signage so quickly.

    Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

Off topic, but I laughed the first time I was in the elevator of the mostly Chinese-owned condo at Lee Centre, and the floor numbers skipped 4, 13, 14, 24, 34, and the last floors above 39 were PH1, PH2, PH3, and PH5. Same with the unit numbers. In my experience, first-generation Asians don't...

    TTC: New Fare Gate Installation

Great, thanks! I really like them, and think they are a huge improvement. However I do wish they were faster, they do lag a bit when compared to other cities with similar gates.

    TTC: New Fare Gate Installation

I don't know if it will be too much, but maybe you could also indicate somehow which stations haven't been upgraded, but do have Presto readers. Then the list could also show the overall Presto installation status.

Metrolinx: Bombardier Flexity Freedom & Alstom Citadis Spirit LRVs

My understanding is that Metrolinx is the first customer for the Flexity Freedom, as there aren't any actually built and running anywhere yet (I think the most closely-related model in operation is the European Flexity 2). So really, the Freedom is only "off-the-shelf" for anyone who buys it...

    Toronto Bike Share

So I saw a bunch of the new bike stations along the Danforth yesterday. They were mostly empty and appeared to be out of service , and also don't show up on the official bike share maps/apps. However I saw one bike docked in at Danforth/Lamb Ave (by Greenwood) and tried my key, and it worked...

    Roads: Traffic Signals

An interesting recent video out of the Netherlands about demand-actuated signals for bikes, cars, and buses...

TTC: Flexity Streetcars Testing & Delivery (Bombardier)

That's exactly what I was thinking at the time. With the pan, they could've even just backed it up a bit, then switched right into the loop, and done the repairs there.

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

That's true, and of course in my ideal world there would be no parking, extended sidewalks, and cycle tracks. But that popping in and out of cyclists, the pedestrians everywhere, and slow cars and streetcars, that bit of unpredictability, I find keeps everyone more alert, slow, and is exactly...

TTC: Flexity Streetcars Testing & Delivery (Bombardier)

I passed by just after the repair crews showed up, and decided to stop and watch. It looks like it was a problem with the contact shoe for the overhead. A crew removed and replaced the contact on the pole, and then 4407 was able to move again.

    Richmond Hill Yonge Line 1 North Subway Extension | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

Agreed, that we would need a DRL to at least Sheppard before this extension could go through. However I think the whole approach is wrong anyway. It becomes hugely inefficient to have such a long subway line with the kind of stop-spacing it has, both for operations and passengers. This traffic...

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

I was also skeptical about Roncy when they redesigned it, but have come to realize it's probably the best design given its width. I would've loved a separated bike lane, but cars generally drive pretty slow on it. Really everyone moves along at about the same speed, and it's easy for people to...

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

Are those the first bicycle-shaped traffic signals in Toronto? Haven't seen them anywhere else, but I'm glad we're using them now. Although I find it unnecessarily redundant now to have the words "Bicycle Signal". It also seems unnecessary having two signals. I don't know why every transit and...

    Toronto Queens Quay & Water's Edge Revitalization | ?m | ?s | Waterfront Toronto

I think the stretches along the trail are fine. The trees, benches, and pavement make it fairly clear where people should be, and though some people still wander onto the trail without looking, all the design in the world wouldn't change that without physically fencing everything off, which I...

    Toronto Queens Quay & Water's Edge Revitalization | ?m | ?s | Waterfront Toronto

I think the basic problem is the intersection design. The mixed pedestrian/bike zone is a mess. I understand things get busy, and I appreciate that, but if the bike trail was perceived as a road by pedestrians, there would be a lot less people spilling onto it. They should've designed the trail...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Although I don't blame drivers too much for not knowing, there seems to be many different intersection types when it comes to bike lanes. Some with dashed lines, some cycle tracks go right up to the intersection, sometimes they disappear and sharrows appear, etc. Even Richmond and Adeleide have...

Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

I see they're finally using proper (and generally world-standard) transit signals for the LRT. I figure it'll probably be used on the Toronto LRT lines too, and hope it'll eventually make it to Toronto's streetcar lines, or at least those in a streetcar ROW.

TTC: Flexity Streetcars Testing & Delivery (Bombardier)

The link says the streetcar will be free to ride. Any idea of how that will work for passengers getting off at Union Station? I think before there used to be a fare box in the streetcar loop, but that's gone. Maybe they should put a presto reader there.

    Toronto Union Pearson Express | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | MMM Group Limited

I took the UPX yesterday at 3 pm from Union to Bloor, to compare it to my subway commute. The train was probably about 75% full. From Bloor/Dundas West, the subway is probably still more convenient if you work more than a 5 min walk from Union, but the UPX is definitely attractive with the...
