Movie Theatres in Toronto - Old and New

Well it seems everything that Rui touches goes dysfunctional. Canadian wealthy neighbourhoods is probably under served by international cinema chains such as Alamo Drafthouse. I can't find any info on this too. Hopefully it is not a Cineplex theatre but I would not be surprise if it is one...

Movie Theatres in Toronto - Old and New

The problem is not unique to Rui or to the Toronto Underground cinema. Across the U.S., small business owners were pressured to convert their theatres into digital projection by Hollywood studios but refuses to help finance them. Some small towns have its theatres closed down since they can't...

Toronto non-mall retail (Odds & Ends)

No problem. I have not visit there yet but I will be today. This was on the Star last week regarding the theatre shutdown with the exception of the retraining part because I got it from a Scotiabank Theatre staff who was retraining employees there last week and on the reopening day.

For some reason, the Humber is closed again according to some members on Cinema Treasures. http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/4830

The takeover did happen on Friday. All A.M.C. locations were closed on Thursday due to replacements of signage, ticket machines and cash registers. Plus staff retraining e.g. learning the Scene program.

Well, it seems the Interchange is not the only location that has reduced screens. A.M.C. also reduced a number of screens at a location in Covina, California. www.yelp.ca/biz/amc-covina-30-covina

That was a super quick hand over to Empire. Cineplex is also planning to retrain A.M.C. employees to it the "Cineplex" way. I have asked an employee at Yonge & Dunads and she said this week is the hand over to Cineplex.

The Tenor (10 Dundas St E, Ent Prop Trust, 10s, Baldwin & Franklin)

They still exist at the Scotiabank. The founder of Timeplay and also the founder of Playdium is a friend of Cineplex's boss. So I won't be surprise if Cineplex is still doing business with them. The theatre will rebranded as a Cineplex Odeon in the press release. Closing the Scotiabank...

Well, it would be a totally waste to close down Yonge & Dundas cinemas since the theatre is still new. Scotiabank recently have new and expensive seats installed in the IMAX theatre. Both likely to remain open and maybe the Scotiabank Theatre may get V.I.P. auditoriums.

Toronto non-mall retail (Odds & Ends)

A.M.C.'s Canadian operations in my opinion was doomed from the start when Loews Cineplex and Famous Players were expanding in the late 90's. Galaxy Cinemas was just getting started. Canada has a small population, duopoly between Cineplex and Empire and lack of good space to build theatres made...

Movie Theatres in Toronto - Old and New

I knew this is going to happen. Canada is too small for A.M.C. and lack of good retail space. Also plus the duopoly between Empire and Cineplex. I'm very sure no one would buy the Interchange since it is across from the popular Colossus theatre.

    Eaton Centre Shooting

I walked passed the Eaton Centre with all the crowds there. I finally found out on the news there was a shooting at the food court when I got home. I mean I feel it is kind of pointless for the suspect to shoot at bystanders considering there are security cameras all over the place.

    Scotiabank Cinema

I do not heard anything about Scotiabank is getting digital Imax but I do agree this is the right opportunity during new seat installations. Colossus Woodbridge already converted theirs into digital.

    Scotiabank Cinema

The Imax theatre is closed for the last few days because it is getting new seats that are the same as the Ultra AVX except it is in black vinyl. Each seat cost $160 and they are designed to keep out bed bugs.

A.M.C. Theatres today was sold for 2.6 billion U.S. dollars to Wanda Group and it is China's largest cinema chain. Canadian locations including Yonge and Dundas are part of the deal. Wanda said business will not change and will invest an additional $500 million to renovate aging theatres and...
