    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

My comment was more in response to the "if I walk onto a train track, airport runway or highway I can’t be surprised when I’m run over" statement. Refusing medical intervention or talking to the police are everyone's rights and we should be surprised when certain elements of society exercise...

    The Coming Disruption of Transport

Not to completely defend Ontario governments, which historically lean to 'nanny-state', there are a number of regulations in place to try to accommodate emerging transportation options. Three-wheeled motorcycles (BRP Spyder, HD Trike) can be operated on a restricted M licence. Pilot...

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

Not when it is reasonably possible to avoid hitting you, but, from what I saw on the video link, the driver appears to deliberately endanger them (although has not yet been charged with anything according to the link). If you were visible on a runway, I doubt a pilot would be justified in...

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

Which brings it back to the reality that a rail line needs an economic reason to exist unless the government - whatever level - has deep and enduring pockets.

    The Coming Disruption of Transport

Not a "bike" because it has four wheels. The company calls it a 'mobility scooter'. They're not extensively regulated in Ontario but municipalities can have bylaw regarding where they can/cannot travel. If the vacation "near Kincardine" was in Huron-Kinloss Township (just south of...

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

I'll leave the speculation and economic arguments to others, but any contract can be cancelled. Governments of all stripes do it and accept the cancellation costs as the political or ideological cost of doing business. And no, a government cannot make a contract or legislation irrevocable.

    General railway discussions

That will be cool. I have the vaguest memory of seeing mainline steam from an aunt's place near what we now call the Lakeshore East ROW, but I did see - and hear - 2816 running at track speed a few years ago and it was quite something. Union Pacific is taking their 'Big Boy' on a multi-state...

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

They're (collectively) not afraid of it, they simply have seen little to no value in it - to them. Sadly, virtually everything a government does that isn't specifically mandated by a piece of legislation (i.e. they 'have to' do it) is driven by how many potential 'votes' the backroom tea leaf...

    Train Spotting

I liked the 'beaver crest'. The way it was rendered gave it a 3-dimensional look.

    Hosting a summer Olympic games

I have a couple of relatives that used to be serious triathletes (certainly not at the Olympic level, but competitive) and they have told me of all sorts of weird and wonderful 'bodily events' that can happen during and after a race.

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

Are you referring to former Hwy 2A that parallels Kingston Rd. from roughly Highland Creek to Hwy 401? That was downloaded to Toronto back in the late '90s. I don't a reference to 401A or B on the MTO traffic count table I'm looking at. Internal 'bookkeeping' and public wayfinding don't...

RMR has also cancelled their routes that touch Jasper at least until Aug 13th.

Road Safety & Vision Zero Plan

I'm reminded of a series of (award winning apparently) Department of Highways commercials from the early 1970s I can't image a reference to a 'snow plow tail gunner' would survive the government's image gatekeepers today.

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

Bayfield interchange/bridge is listed as 2026-2027 as well. The 1.1km stretch between 'the split' (we used to call it Willow Creek) and Crown Hill is a bit of an oddity, since Hwy 400 veers n/w and Hwy 11 doesn't start until Crown Hill/CR 93). Administratively they have to identify it as...

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Indeed. We used to live near the line back when it was still (barely) operational and I used to walk the ROW. Many of the ties had date spikes that were all from the 1930s and 40's. A couple of spots north/east of Goodwood had rail lubricators, and there is a significant (in southern Ontario...

    VIA Rail

I suppose if the government had wanted to exclude other transportation providers or a company that could potentially stand to loose or gain market share, they would have written it into the proposal. Otherwise, they are a publicly traded for-profit corporation and free to offer to invest as...

    General railway discussions

There's an alphabet soup of planning regions; Greater Toronto Area, Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, Golden Horseshoe, Greater Golden Horseshoe. I'm not sure they are all still relevant, but those that are used in government planning documents have a defined area.

    The Coming Disruption of Transport

Indeed, although 'dirt bikes *can* be street legal provided they are licenced and insured. Manner of operation is, quite rightly, often another thing. The legality of ATVs/UTVs and MSVs on municipal roads is entirely up to the individual municipality. Again, licencing, insurance and manner of...

    The Coming Disruption of Transport

Fair point. We had one at the farm and would occasionally run it on the road. Different law/different jurisdictions aside, private 'gated' communities are a lot more common in the States. Even where they are allowed under the pilot program (Pelee Island and Twp. of Huron-Kinloss), there are...

    LCBO / The Beer Store

I was pondering this last night as I went for a backroads m/c ride that passed four or five independent convenience stores (the rural/northern type; 'fireworks, worms and homemade cheese' types of places). It puts a lot of pressure on the owner to drive all over picking up a few cases each from...
