Universal Health Care - Still Not Possible in US

I am surprised it's that low, to be frank.

    Next Mayor of Toronto?

True, although if anyone is getting paid too much, it's exactly those managers and CEOs whose compensation has risen far faster than anyone else's.

    City Workers Strike 2009

Their base salary is quite high, and they've got a very good pension plan (which, frankly, I'm quite envious of, but then I think company pension plans are a good idea). I think the health benefit calculation, while technically correct, is meaningless because I would expect that addition for...

    City Workers Strike 2009

Wait, so garbage workers get paid $80,000 now...? Also, since this anger, in part, stems from the fact that those uneducated garbage strikers are making a pretty decent wage, I wonder what the people's position here is on the 79 seeing as how that one includes lawyers, planners, analysts, etc.?

    Next Premier of Ontario?

Hudak doesn't need to be 'portrayed' as Harris 2.0 because he pretty much notes he's Harris 2.0. Dalton shouldn't have too much trouble defending the HST, either.

    Next Premier of Ontario?

    Indeed.

    City Workers Strike 2009

^ the Harris purge is a disaster we're still paying for, so I'm far from hoping for it. What we need is a pragmatic non-ideologue, but such people seem to be in short supply.

    Where would you live?

Yes, I'm commandeering the Colborne Lodge.

    Next Premier of Ontario?

I agree with everything except that the enormous deficit was unexpected. It was a giant elephant in the room nobody wanted to touch: Conservatives for the obvious reason, and the Liberals because they knew they couldn't run a 'no new taxes' platform if the potential deficit was acknowledged...

What does "underinsured" mean in the US?

^ Thanks for that; Moyers is one of the rare pundits who aren't in the whitewashing business.

    City Workers Strike 2009

The point is -- they don't decide what's fair for themselves. They cannot say 'our salary is now X more,' and that's that. They can decide all they want, but it's not a go until the city agrees.

    City Workers Strike 2009

Last time I checked, they have to negotiate that with the city, hence the strike.

    Unions!

I have *no* idea where you get this from. Their car ownership is actually higher in Finland than many other countries in EU; and less cars is a GOOD thing, because their government seriously invests in transit infrastructure. Yeah, the GINI index in Europe is generally compressed (though...

    City Workers Strike 2009

Although I was only a minor in economics back in the day, I did quite a bit of research on this, and yeah -- the evidence points to the fact that there is a large productivity gain to be had from an extended vacation, regardless of any other factor. The reason why it makes sense should be...
