Improving GTHA Transit via Tech (Apps, Maps, Real-Time Traffic & Transit ETAs)

RideCo is a KW start-up doing something along the lines of Uber Pool and Lyft Line, namely adaptive small-vehicle on-demand transit. They're piloting it with Metrolinx in Milton, I believe.

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

"Opportunities to increase the number of revenue trips (e.g., counterpeak) are being explored." Any ideas what this is likely referring to?

Kitchener to Toronto train service & the tech sector

Point taken on there being some service. But most of the trips I'm seeing are 2.5-3 hours to get between Union and Guelph, which is weak. About as weak as Union to Kitchener via Route 25. The whole point of the advocacy is to get decent, reliable, relatively frequent transit between Toronto...

Kitchener to Toronto train service & the tech sector

There's an existing Toronto-Guelph GO bus that I'm not aware of? The problem with GO running a small number of buses between Toronto and Kitchener directly is that it would piss off Greyhound (even more), and they might abandon the corridor. In which case GO would pretty much need to take over...

Kitchener to Toronto train service & the tech sector

I didn't respond to your post. The Silicon Valley comparison is very rough. One major difference is that the "suburban" location here is growing more dense and urban - something Google tried to get Mountain View to do, to no avail.

Kitchener to Toronto train service & the tech sector

Large employers within walking distance or a 20 minute iXpress/LRT trip from the Kitchener station include: Google (which runs its own buses from Toronto), Desire2Learn, Sun Life (also runs buses), Manulife, University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, Open Text, SAP/Sybase. Not to...

Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

Minor correction: this would have been the Kitchener-Waterloo Street Railway. The Grand River Railway took the route of what's now the Iron Horse Trail. (The former was a frequent urban streetcar, the latter was an interurban.)

    Carsharing Grows

Zipcar is expanding to London, Ottawa, and Kitchener-Waterloo. That makes for three carsharing operators in each of those areas - Student CarShare and Zipcar are in all three, Community CarShare is in London and KW, and Vrtucar is in Ottawa.

    Mississauga Hurontario-Main Line 10 LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

The only way this isn't a complete fail is if there is a cross-platform transfer to get from one train to the other, i.e. a 1 minute transfer. Otherwise this is a system that has no value for shorter trips that traverse the central portion. In a corridor route like this one, those should be...

    Mississauga Hurontario-Main Line 10 LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

Utterly bizarre. In what world does that make any sense? Even when you have a strong downtown, there's value in through-running of services. But in this case there isn't even that.

    Metrolinx: Presto Fare Card

I don't agree that someone who won't want to register is necessarily an infrequent user. If the transit agency says "you can use any contactless card to pay", many people will avoid getting a special purpose card. The problem of what happens when you tap in with one card and tap out with...

    Metrolinx: Presto Fare Card

If you're going to require registration of the card, then there's not that much value to the open-payment aspect of an open-payment system.

    Metrolinx: Presto Fare Card

I don't really understand how this comment sparked a discussion about the merits of having multiple debit cards. It doesn't matter whether you don't need or want multiple debit cards - other people do. Moreover, I believe open payment systems generally accept all kinds of NFC cards, both debit...

But there was a pretty fiery column today saying they should!

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Plenary and Kiewit are part of GrandLinq, which is building the ION light rail project in Waterloo Region.

Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

Tourists aside, I can't really see how a DMU would be that much of an improvement over the Route 21 bus service from Conestoga Mall to Elmira (that takes 25 minutes). Certainly not enough to be worth the extra costs and hassle of a completely different operation from everything else GRT has.

Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

Let's be honest - there's not exactly a lot of tourists coming to Kitchener-Waterloo, and the vast majority of those come by car. Especially if they're going to the market. Bringing the LRT to St. Jacobs is a nice-sounding idea, but not one that makes too much sense at this point in time.

Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

For this project, Waterloo Region ordered 14 Bombardier Flexity Freedom trains for delivery in 2016. Any ideas of whether Bombardier is capable of delivering on that?

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

According to this CTV Kitchener video, the new GO Transit facility on Shirley Ave in Kitchener will have indoor storage and maintenance space for four trains and 30 buses.

TTC: Flexity Streetcars Testing & Delivery (Bombardier)

That's not universal. Some jurisdictions accept the best-scoring bid that is within the budget; price is one of the scoring factors but not the only one.
