GO Transit: Union Station Shed Replacement & Track Upgrades (Zeidler)

I’m usually only on the Union Station building thread, so a change in track configuration was not on my radar... I see that the recent Star article on proposed major platform changes mentioned here...

Here’s the picture, according to my mind’s eyeball: You head up the ramp before leaving the Bay Concourse proper (we didn’t know it as that back then, did we?) and on your right you pass the lineups of the McDonald’s stand and convenience store (remember the patties and popcorn? The owners now...

Also known as Front St Bar and Grill at one point, no?

An elevator to the main level of the York Concourse is hiding at the north end of the food court, located next to the (full service) Tim Horton’s and opening above roughly between the Starbucks Express and Union Chicken. It’s almost unmarked, from what I could see, but operational when I tried...

I reckon the original circular counter lasted until the late sixties or mid seventies (when VIA was created) and that square info-column was put in. (If you trace a circle a foot or two larger than the existing desk, there is a gentle groove in the marble floor, presumably caused by people...

I imagine there is quite the heritage pushback but all that discussion seems to be occurring off the public record.

All four pillars are fully visible now (including the Bay Concourse column, as the hoarding has been moved closer to the East Wing). I’m alright with them except they display premature info (viz. Bay, plus the VIA Concourse indicates “Gate*” 3 is accessible in that direction, which is still not...

Actually, from what VIA staff and Travelers Aid volunteers were told, they were expecting the permanent removal of the clock, main departure boards and info booth over a year ago. Then— all work on the floor stopped (what, eight months ago?) with no official explanation that I am aware of...

Yes. I recall the digital ad pillars going into York Concourse-proper *after* the train monitors were installed. This seems backward.

I recall when the Sheppard subway opened with chronic problems that eventually required full overhauls of escalators. Official cause: too much construction dust got into the mechanisms.

Perhaps. Has it been reported on elsewhere? Construction looked pretty well done last I looked.

Feels too soon to say. Is there a scenario where a choice was made to prevent lengthy phone charging, computer work, and general electronic lingering? Like if the food court becomes frequently crowded? That said, USB chargers were made quite available upstairs in the York Concourse.

Two key parts of the VMC hub were not finished when the subway opened: the interchange with the Vivaway on Highway 7 and the SmartCentres bus terminal. Are the escalators, etc. done at the busway station? More importantly, what’s the holdup on the bus terminal? Now pushed to “2019”

IIRC, teams of humans/animals hauled cargo back and forth from Front Street to wharves. Okay, it seems I Recall not quite Correctly: http://torontoplaques.com/Pages/Teamway.html

Alas, there appears to be water damage in the arch above the west end of the Great Hall. A bucket was placed on the floor, between the entrance from Front Street and the access to York Concourse. Visible discolouration in the curved ceiling.

New “Union Mercado” convenience store opening up in the Front Street Promenade, south side, roughly midway between the washrooms and Calii Love.

Has this signage change now been suspended, or even reversed...?
