    General railway discussions

BNSF has crews repairing their line right now and will apparently have the line open pretty soon, which is not surprising given that railways are pretty experienced in fixing washouts quickly. The biggest problem with diverting trains through the US is probably the bottlenecks in Chicago. CN...

    General railway discussions

There are people on this forum more qualified than me to meaningfully assess the extent of the damage here. I will note that washouts in the Fraser Canyon are actually pretty common and CP and CN have lots of experience repairing them. The only alternate routes for rail traffic to/from the...

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Regarding Milton, how much freight traffic currently operates on the Galt sub in Mississauga? I suspect it's less than on CN between the York Halton sub and Bayview. I used to live in London and would listen to the RTC giving OCS clearances to trains on the scanner, there were usually less than...

    GO Transit Midtown Corridor

Canada isn't Europe. CN and CP are publicly traded companies who legally must consider the interests of their mostly American shareholders, and their track is their private property.

Rail: Ontario-Quebec High Speed Rail Study

Compared to some of it's European neighbors (*cough* France *cough*), Germany's ICE system is notoriously fragmented and did not really involve a lot of new construction. The initial phases were actually quite similar to VIAs HFR proposal. This is partly because of the nature of German...

Sheppard Line 4 Subway Extension (Proposed)

The traffic light timings are terrible on Spadina and are probably the biggest reason why the line is so slow, the city refuses to turn on transit priority signalling and almost every intersection has a protected left before the streetcar phase. It's especially bad at Richmond, Adelaide, Front...

    VIA Rail

I think that Chatham Coach used to offer this service, I have no idea when it was cancelled, though I'm guessing it was gone by the 1990s.

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

Yeah, Calgary has only one bus route with all day, 7 day per week frequent service, and most of the suburban bus routes are useless for anything other than getting to an LRT station. Edmonton actually has a much better high frequency bus grid.

Toronto Spadina Subway Extension Emergency Exits | ?m | 1s | TTC | IBI Group

AFAIK Wonderland already pays for the GO bus service.

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

He's referring to CP shutting down their piggyback services. Sears and Canadian Tire were major customers, and Sears is gone, so.... https://www.railwayage.com/intermodal/cp-shutting-expressway/ They've been gradually reducing them for years anyways.

    Toronto Pearson International Airport

There are basic services (Relay store and duty free) at the IFT. Some of the transborder gates on Pier F were also converted to swing gates to relieve the hammerhead. AFAIK both T1 and T3 were built with infrastructure for remote busing from day one, it was just mothballed until now. When the...

Toronto Spadina Subway Extension Emergency Exits | ?m | 1s | TTC | IBI Group

Australian cities have extensive suburban rail systems because railways in Australia were historically more focused on local/intrastate transportation (which was more the domain of the radial lines in North America). Australia still doesn't really have a fully integrated contiguous...

    VIA Rail

The Japanese government socialized the JNR's enormous debts when they privatized the system (there is a state owned company that exists solely to service legacy JNR debt), downloaded many unprofitable local lines to municipal/prefectural governments, and severly cut service on a lot of other...

    TTC: Other Items (catch all)

There were a few streetcar systems that used two wires (like a trolleybus) to avoid this. Havana was a notable example, probably because the groundwater there is brackish, as was Cincinnati.

    Metrolinx: Presto Fare Card

It's illegal to walk into the bus/streetcar platforms without going through the station entrance. The only exceptions are some of the former zone two stations in the west end where the bus platforms are outside the fare paid area.

    London Rapid Transit (In-Design)

The UofT made similar complaints when the Spadina streetcar was being built in the 1990s.

    TTC: Other Items (catch all)

I don't think the TTC has enough bus capacity to operate the 501 for most of the year. The only reason they can do it now is they run less service in the summer. Replacing streetcars with buses would probably also require two new bus divisions to be established somewhere.

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

There are a couple of lights on the TCH on the prairies that really should be interchanges, the 1-16 intersection in Manitoba is probably the best example.
