Yeah, Calgary has only one bus route with all day, 7 day per week frequent service, and most of the suburban bus routes are useless for anything other than getting to an LRT station. Edmonton actually has a much better high frequency bus grid.

There were a few streetcar systems that used two wires (like a trolleybus) to avoid this. Havana was a notable example, probably because the groundwater there is brackish, as was Cincinnati.

It's illegal to walk into the bus/streetcar platforms without going through the station entrance. The only exceptions are some of the former zone two stations in the west end where the bus platforms are outside the fare paid area.

The UofT made similar complaints when the Spadina streetcar was being built in the 1990s.

I don't think the TTC has enough bus capacity to operate the 501 for most of the year. The only reason they can do it now is they run less service in the summer. Replacing streetcars with buses would probably also require two new bus divisions to be established somewhere.

There are a couple of lights on the TCH on the prairies that really should be interchanges, the 1-16 intersection in Manitoba is probably the best example.
