I'm not at all a fan of the frit pattern either, but the towers are certainly an interesting juxtaposition with the heritage buildings in the district.

I think VU was largely the work of Young+Wright if I recall correctly. But yeah, HPA was involved. I still think HPA deserves credit for creating generally really high-calibre stuff. Working for developers is tough and incredibly frustrating, so I am a bit sympathetic in the case of a firm like HPA.

The Tenor (10 Dundas St E, Ent Prop Trust, 10s, Baldwin & Franklin)

This thing coming down and being replaced sounds too good to be true-- I can't possibly see that happening.

I live adjacent to the Financial District and have to cross through it to get most places on a daily basis, and I can vouch for the fact that the CBD is very quiet outside of business hours and weekdays. Downtown as a whole remains lively, but the Financial District can get very quiet. That...

I don't usually like to prescribe here what I think should be done in a particular neighbourhood because it's just fantasy conjecture, but I think something like The Red Apple (in Rotterdam) would be a really refreshing break from all the fully-glazed towers in the area.

Hariri Pontarini are great architects. The client's demands for density and budget are probably very hard to work with, however.

There are indeed some nice touches around the area, but it certainly lacks an "intimate" neighbourhood feel. Some people would argue that's not necessary. I do agree with urbandreamer that it might be nicer to have some more diversity and human scale here. That said, this hotel I am a fan of so...

I'm also curious about which of my statements is a "straw man" argument. Anyone who thinks developers have any higher goal than making a profit does not understand the development industry or how capitalism operates. I am not faulting developers for seeking profit, but rather stating the...

If it's your goal, you are going to want to check your ego at the door and learn what architects actually do. Also, "architect" is a term that holds legal weight and refers to a particular set of credentials; I'd recommend that you don't describe yourself as an architect beyond this message board.

Beautiful shots, udo! It makes me cringe to think of all the exposed envelope assemblies in projects like this around the city, where ice is forming before everything is sealed off to the outside. Some crazy ice build-up on those upper levels!

It's not humorous, it's grating, and I fear that you may actually believe your own delusions. Revit is not useful unless you understand the architectural design process, structural systems, OBC, etc. If generating renderings is your game, Revit will disappoint.

    Toronto The Berczy | 41.76m | 13s | Concert | Arcadis

It's good fun to play around in SketchUp making renderings (keeping in mind that generating renderings =/= architectural design), but seriously, it's tacky to pretend that you are a gifted architectural visionary because you can recognize and appreciate what are common architectural gestures...

Looks cold and corporate. This is the St. Lawrence / Old Town neighbourhood. Please, something more befitting of the area!

Very excited to see what gets created here, and on a different scale than we are used to in CityPlace. Also interested to see what architects get involved. Teeple please!

    Toronto 300 Front Street West | 156.05m | 49s | Tridel | Wallman Architects

Inconsistency is a major issue with this building. Every elevation makes multiple exceptions to its own rule, and there are competing patterns and themes and colour sets at work here. It's just an inconsistent mish-mash, which is unfortunate since consistency is incredibly important in a...

    Toronto Pinnacle One Yonge | 345.5m | 105s | Pinnacle | Hariri Pontarini

I know, right? How dare we intervene on the private sector instead of just letting them have their way! Naw. We need public involvement, we need government intervention, and we need to tweak developers' (whose major goal is profit above all else) plans to create something that is better for...

I'm unaware of the status of the Lalani Group site and the neighbouring HMV site, but I will tell you that if you trust marketing renderings or make your conclusions based on them, you are going to have a bad time.

I have no doubt the views are amazing, but boy does that restaurant terrace ever look cramped and precarious. Doesn't seem like a very nice space they've created there. I never understood the "tacked-on" balconies on the south elevation anyway. They look like an afterthought, and I can't...

    Movember misogynist?

The other alternative is to move away from gendered washrooms entirely and provide individual washrooms in a building. It's not always feasible but it also works. This has been done with changerooms (see Regent Park Aquatic Centre, etc.) as well. A lot of people want a very high degree of...
