    Ontario Liberals and Transit

YES, YES, YES. The Big Blue Machine PCs of old are much more similar to the modern Liberals than they are to the Harris/Hudak PCs. Here's what Wikipedia has to say on Leslie Frost, the Conservative premier of Ontario from 1949 to 1961. "Frost's government oversaw great expansion in the role of...

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

A regular traffic lane on Highway 417 in Ottawa (leftmost WB lane from 416 to Eagleson) is scheduled to be converted to an HOV lane sometime this year.

Politics: Tim Hudak's Plan for Ontario if he becomes Premier

Aren't lawn signs illegal until Wednesday?

Politics: 2014 Provincial Election & Transit Politics

Count me among the NDP'ers upset about the budget. I'm a New Democrat (card-carrying member in fact) who really liked this budget and is really peeved that Horwath voted to bring it down. I actually cancelled my monthly donation to the party a few hours ago.

    TTC: Redesigning TTC Signage

How about this: Line 1 to Downsview Line 1 to Finch And that's it. Eliminate directions, via X, etc. Just refer to directions by their end points. That's what Montreal does and it works beautifully. By far the easiest RT system in Canada to navigate as an unfamiliar tourist/new arrival.

High Speed Rail: London - Kitchener-Waterloo - Pearson Airport - Toronto

To be fair YYZ has a shitton of airlines operating out of it from all over the world whereas YTZ is pretty much Porter-only.

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

The HSR will skip Guelph--passing through without stopping. It will be an express that stops only at London, Kitchener, Pearson, and Union.

High Speed Rail: London - Kitchener-Waterloo - Pearson Airport - Toronto

Murray has made enough clarifications on the HSR proposal for us to know that what Guelph MPP is referring to it is NOT the HSR. She's referring to the conventional GO REX that will run in the area paralleling the HSR. (It sounds like we have now confirmed that electric, local GO REX will run...

    New Transit Funding Sources

Paramedic robots are being tested at universities in Japan. It's not as crazy as you think. Also, while computers do get glitches and errors, they statistically are much less likely to screw up than a human being.

    New Transit Funding Sources

"However, a computer and the software program that runs it is not going to be physically able to go out check to see if the pedestrian that was just struck at a crossing is still alive and initiate CPR to resuscitate them is it? Furthermore a software program/computer is not going to be able to...

High Speed Rail: London - Kitchener-Waterloo - Pearson Airport - Toronto

As a citizen of Kingston I can definitely tell that in the small cities of Ontario no one uses the local airports. Everyone just drives to Toronto. It's cost. If I'm going to say, Paris, I can fly Kingston-Toronto-Paris but Air Canada basically adds $500 to the trip compared to the cost of just...

Cycling: Segregated Bike Lanes on Eglinton

Saying "there's not many cyclists here, no point building bike lanes" is a stupid way of reasoning. By the same logic you can say "there's not many people swimming across the river here, no point building a bridge". By that logic no bridge in the world would have ever been built. Or "there's...

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

If the feds chip in $5B for Highway 17 we could very well see 4-lane expressways** from Halifax all the way to Calgary. It would be a beautiful day. **if you can count Prairie style roads as expressways $5B would be a lot though. The feds are stingy. They've only budgeted $10B total for their...

Sheppard Line 4 Subway Extension (Proposed)

Federal money, that's the game changer. I feel like everything pledged to date is the minimum that will be built, assuming provincial funds only. Federal funds, if available, will be used to free up money to fund other things. The Sheppard extension fans better hope for some generous money from...

Sheppard Line 4 Subway Extension (Proposed)

GO improvements within the GTHA alone are going to be about $8B. That leaves $7B for local transit within the GTHA. That's enough to fund the DRL, Hurontario LRT, Durham BRT, Hamilton LRT, but not anything more.

Sheppard Line 4 Subway Extension (Proposed)

Libs have said they're going for: 1) GO REX 2) DRL 3) Hurontario LRT 4) Durham BRT 5) Hamilton LRT. All of that needs to be paid for with $15B, which is doable if the DRL is being built only from Danforth to Yonge (no western or northern segments). There's no room within a $15B budget...

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

Extending Highway 417 from Ottawa westwards all the way to the Manitoba border, as a full 400-series expressway with no level crossings, has been costed at approximately $20 billion. No way that's being funded. What is likely is that highway widening will instead by RIRO style--think Highway 11...

    New Transit Funding Sources

How about looking into automated driverless EMUs for the new electric GO? Regulations prevent automation unless a route is fully grade separated. That's political bull. There's no technological reason why a railway with level crossings can't be automated. Computers can handle level crossings...

    New Transit Funding Sources

^ On his twitter feed Murray (@Glen4ONT) has said straight out that Toronto-Kitchener-London HSR is a thing and it is happening.

Why is commuter/regional rail so bad in Canada?

Canadian cities don't really have commuter rail, because our urban forms don't really need it. Commuter/regional rail works in geographically large metropolitan areas with exurbs. Places too far for conventional rapid transit to work. Imagine trying to extend TTC subway or STM metro service...
