What next? A cladding of the Old City Hall clock tower in trendy ledge stone?

It's wider than it is deep. That's a slab in my books.... or not, call it what you want but this design adds to the problem rather than mitigating it. Fail.

What's with all the anxiety in today's youth?

You sound like you have a chip on your shoulder. I'll bite, how have 'generic, anglo Canadian types' lost ground?... and just what exactly are 'generic, anglo Canadian types'? Dude, you better check your ritalin dose. Your contempt of older white people is getting the better of your...

Another slab on the water? This is banal. The improvements to the realm are interesting but they come at the cost of another wall to the lake. I'm convinced that Toronto is still uncomfortable with its waterfront.

What's with all the anxiety in today's youth?

Not really. If anything we should probably go back a bit more to this approach. Every generation has challenges. The past wasn't some ideal golden age, it was far rampant with discrimination, misogyny, ageism, racism, homophobia, classism and all kinds of other inequities. Today's...

What's with all the anxiety in today's youth?

WASP parents don't love their children any less or any more than European parents. The approach is not 'uncaring' for the sake of being uncaring. This is a gross misunderstanding. The approach is more one of 'tough love', the believe being that you are not doing your children any favours in...

What's with all the anxiety in today's youth?

A common stereotype of immigrants in North America is that they are industrious, seeking a better life (i.e. an American way of life specifically), wanting to assimilate and contribute to society etc. It is a fundamental part of the American dream/mythology. This stereotype does seem to be...

What's with all the anxiety in today's youth?

Yes, there is likely a strong cultural element at play here. In the map above the higher percentage countries are the ones the lower percentage countries often perceive as lazy, entitled or dependant on hand-outs etc. http://www.pewglobal.org/2012/05/29/chapter-4-views-of-eu-countries-and-leaders/

Yep, even if it isn't your cup of tea you have to admit that it's refreshingly different.

Saks Fifth Avenue Flagship (Queen & Yonge)

There really is no need to turn this into class warfare. Rich people ride bikes too :)

Those examples certainly offer bolder aesthetic gestures and better quality. In the end though I still feel that they share the same fundamental problem as the Nordstrom's mess in that they overwhelm their urban context somewhat. Once the novelty of the cladding wears off/becomes dated we are...

Ah ok, that explains it. I just knew something was off here. Now I can like this building! :)

I really don't like modern aesthetics for department stores. Given the scale involved they almost always end up with a hulking bunker-like presence more fit to be surrounded by suburban parking lots. I much prefer the whimsy and detail of more old-school type urban department stores...

Saks Fifth Avenue Flagship (Queen & Yonge)

I would anticipate some overlap of course. The point of being a Saks shopper isn't just about the merchandise. It's also about shopping at Saks, i.e. the experience, the caché, the service and the atmosphere etc. In other words, where one choses to buy one's Nudie jeans probably isn't just...

Just to clarify, there is absolutely no criticism in the fact that you are not a Saks customer! We all have our means. Bring on the Nordies Rack, I say!!

I hate to be a pooper about it because I really like the tower but.... How the heck is this monolithic, soul-crushing blank wall considered good design? The tower doesn't excuse this dreadful, nay criminal, gesture at street level. This is pretty much everything I hate about design. A cool...

Saks Fifth Avenue Flagship (Queen & Yonge)

I agree the pics are lovely. It all feels very luxe, which is what one would expect. I hope they will do the exterior Christmas illuminations that the 5th Avenue store is noted for! As for the merch' are you really asserting that it is nothing more than HBC and in fact less than? I'm asking...

Anyone looking to Saks for discounts and bargains is sort of missing the point. You are not a Saks customer. I'm glad to be getting a diversity of retail options that accommodates all budgets and aspirations.

City building isn't just about creating towers. This row of 'old' houses creates a delightful little side street with so much more potential. A city with vision would realize this. We've seen all kinds of creative way that density might be added, if need be, but let's be careful that the west...

Sometimes 'getting it right' takes time. A strange concept in a boom town, I know. Patience and enjoy watching this quality cladding take form.
