TTC: Automatic Train Control and Subway Platform Screen Doors

ATC's completion is great news! Are trains running at full speed between stations on Line 1 now, or is there still some testing that needs to be done?

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

It feels a bit like the PC's are back in the first half of term 1, those slash and burn years when nothing much was being announced for GO (after they renamed the proposed works to GO Expansion). At the time I remember almost missing Del Duca's PR because at least we were hearing more about GO...

    Montréal Transit Developments

Interesting, thanks. It's still quite a bit slower than the metro, regardless. The good news however is that ATC is now completed on Line 1. Hopefully that helps.

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

That he did, but that was also over 4 years ago. Replace Tim Horton's with McDonald's and you'll find we're right back where we started - plus ça change...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

This is even dumber than that Niagara GO announcement a couple months back. Knowing the PC's, their next press conference will be for a partnership between VIVA and Egg McMuffins.

Do you think this would end up being the pink line proposal or the Rem de l'Est? I would hope slight more for the former, to keep east-west balance.

    Montréal Transit Developments

Wilson, Eglinton and Woodbine come to mind. Line 2 is reasonable, but line 1 just crawls most of the time, obviously not only due to trackage issues. At this point, I can count on a daily commute delay in either direction on line 1. By comparison, all 4 lines on the metro consistently run...

    Montréal Transit Developments

Yes, here is the STM's envisioned metro network for 1982, which now looks like a fantasy map. Regardless, significant expansion of the network would have made life better in the city. Current areas that lack metro service but should absolutely have it by now are Montréal-Nord, swathes of...

Is Andy Byford, the new TTC GM, the leader we've been waiting for?

It is strange and I agree he could have done a lot more for the TTC. At this point I would be satisfied if we had a CEO who wasn't actively hostile to the streetcar network. Down with Rick Leary.

    Montréal Transit Developments

Given the cost and decades-long delays of extending the Blue line eastward, it seems that sadly, we missed the chance to build out the legacy metro, so it will continue to be a rather small network without REM adding a few more stations and a more connectivity in the core. I agree the metro...

    Montréal Transit Developments

Not that the REM is of the highest quality, but I doubt anyone would agree with you that it's "proprietary". It's a standard gauge, steel wheel rail operating on 1 500V overhead catenary, and it uses a pretty standard CBTC GOA 4 signalling system. If you read up on the brief history of Jean...

Is Andy Byford, the new TTC GM, the leader we've been waiting for?

Sadly I agree. The lone oddity that makes me think there's a chance Byford returns to lowly Toronto transit is how short his tenures have been. Eventually that becomes a liability for prospective employers, who will wonder if he'll stay long enough to bring the transformation they seek.

All the more reason to pivot.

    Montréal Transit Developments

Unfortunately, very little in the way of quality transit had been built in Montréal since 2007, and even that was just a modest extension to an existing RT line. My feeling is that Montréalers (who comprise half of Québec's population and many of whom benefit from CDPQ's revenue streams) will...

Is Andy Byford, the new TTC GM, the leader we've been waiting for?

Please. Down with that disappointment Rick Leary who's currently running the TTC. We should have a rule that no American from outside of NYC is ever allowed to run transit in a Canadian city. In fact, future job postings should be limited to applicants coming from European/East Asian/Australian...

    Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

Here's hoping ML/TTC has a change of heart. CBC is quoting about a yearlong delay, which is already bad enough to warrant an interim solution, in part because another severe delay for a GTA transit project will impact confidence in building future projects. And if it's actually longer than a...

    Finch West Line 6 LRT

Agreed, it looks like it moves as fast as Berlin's trams (which really fly).

    Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

Fully agree, especially since it sounds like most of the line could be tested and opened earlier, with only a few stations needing to be bypassed.

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

I'm still sceptical, given what has transpired in hospitals. Transit service isn't as pressing to the general population as ER wait times either, so this is less likely to galvanize a critical mass of "Ontarions" - as he would pronounce it - into sustained protest. Despite it all, I hope within...
