Roads: Increase Ontario 400-series Highway Speed Limit

Here's an example of what happens when people drive at the speed limit in each lane: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoETMCosULQ In my opinion, highway speed limits should be*: -At-grade expressways- 80-90km/h -Grade-separated expressways- 90-100km/h -Freeways (urban)- 100-110km/h -Freeways...

Roads: Increase Ontario 400-series Highway Speed Limit

Our Neighbour Michigan is also considering increasing the 70MPH (113 km/h) limit to 80MPH (129 km/h): http://blogs.windsorstar.com/2013/08/30/star-editorial-speed-limits-on-the-401-are-stuck-in-the-slow-lane/ Ontario has some of the best designed freeways in the world and some of the lowest...

Danforth Line 2 Scarborough Subway Extension

Since the subway will run in a new corridor, is it possible to operate the SRT until this thing is done? That will help reduce the need for buses. If it is not going to be refurbished or replaced you may as well squeeze every ounce of life in it and run it into the ground.

Video is not by me :p Here is one I made... My fastest timelapse yet! Includes the 403 vid above but extends it to travel on the 401 and later DVP. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MW2BWulJSW8

A new 3 lane roundabout on Highway 406 in Welland has opened: http://www.wellandtribune.ca/2013/09/05/live-new-406-roundabout-draws-spectators Video of the highway... with a fail about 20 secs in on the roundabout: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qq83UI4Oszk

I have made a timelapse of Highway 403 between Hamilton and Mississauga, showcasing the HOV lanes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYNRYdzYlMA It is true that the stretch between the QEW and 407 ETR is to be widened, correct? HOV lanes part of this plan by chance?

Roads: Highway 401 Widening - Highway 8 to Highway 410 (MTO, U/C, Planned)

Actually I got it in the other direction at night! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmStI3YmlfA This was my first time driving on the new express lanes.

Roads: Highway 401 Widening - Highway 8 to Highway 410 (MTO, U/C, Planned)

Ok thanks! Was just wondering. Most of the time it's faster for me to take the 401/403/QEW/Gardiner if I'm heading downtown, but the 401/427/Gardiner can be faster when there's construction or congestion.

Roads: Highway 401 Widening - Highway 8 to Highway 410 (MTO, U/C, Planned)

I'm heading this way tomorrow (from London). Are there still a lot of delays here with the construction? Thinking of taking the 403 at Woodstock to bypass the area and rejoin the 401 past it at 401/403/410.

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

It's a pipe dream to have a highway parallel the 401 and provide some relief. Many major US highways have parallel routes, and some even exist in Quebec. ----- Living in London, it can be take up to half an hour to even access the 401 from the north end (which is growing WAY faster than the...

You mean something like this? French Autoroute sign: Something like this or variable/changeable speed limits (per lane) would work. This is essentially the same as highway speed cameras, which were deemed unconstitutional. There is still a debate on weather red light cameras are...

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

Changeable speed limits would work great here, especially when bundled with the COMPASS system in the GTA. However I'm against solely increasing the speed limit for HOV lanes. People assume they're a passing lane because they're on the left and thus want to go really fast, whereas the leftmost...

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

I'm almost certain all widening, extension and reconstitution projects have a design speed of 130. However rehabilitation projects like the one being done on the 403 in Hamilton which don't improve the overall design of the highway has their design speed remain the same.

At 100, its easy for people to do 20 or 30 over the limit. At 120, I think very few people will do more than 10 over the limit. Once you're going 130, driver concentration is pretty much mandatory. Most roads in Europe are 130 and very few go beyond that. In the US some highways are now...

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

There is a website / special interest group lobbying the government to increase the speed limit of the 400 series highways: http://www.stop100.ca/ Also remember that before metric conversion they were 70 MPH, or 113 KM/h. Since they are designed for 130, very little would need to be done to...

Roads: Highway 401 Widening - Highway 8 to Highway 410 (MTO, U/C, Planned)

It's a design flaw because traffic entering 401 westbound from the 427 and 410 feed into the collectors with no chance to transfer to the express. This should be relieved a little when a new basketweave opens in the next part of the project. Also there's diver stupidity for the eastbound...

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

Funny thing is many studies show that higher speed limits on controlled-access highways are safer. Going 100 can lead to distracted driving, especially because you feel slow driving on a road designed for 130 (which nearly all 400-series highways are). If for example the speed limit is 130...

Roads: Highway 401 Widening - Highway 8 to Highway 410 (MTO, U/C, Planned)

I'd assume people on the EB 401 who want to get to the 427 are now taking the new collector lanes west of Hurontario rather than taking the express to collector transfer at the airport. The former split at the 410 was simply labeled Dixie Road, whereas now it's labelled as collectors, correct...

Roads: Highway 401 Widening - Highway 8 to Highway 410 (MTO, U/C, Planned)

There is no transfer from the collector to express lanes on the WB 401 west of Highway 427. This means anyone entering the 401 from the 427, Eglington, Renforth, Dixie and 410 are all funneled into the collector lanes. No actual change has happened as this was the setup before the Ontario...

Roads: Highway 401 Widening - Highway 8 to Highway 410 (MTO, U/C, Planned)

See my post on the previous page. There is nothing planned for this section when this phase is done until the 'beyond 2016' timeframe. The next phase won't start untill 2017 at the very earliest. The HOV lane will remain unused for about a decade.
