General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

There's a full-height curb and 0.75 m spash-pad/buffer between the curb and cycle track, so I think separation is pretty good, as good as most sidewalks, and better really than flex-posts. It's not like the curb-less/roll-curbs on Sherbourne (which essentially makes them just painted bike...

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

So noticed this in December, but wasn't able to get a photo due to snow and/or darkness, until this past weekend. Here are the beginnings of new cycle tracks on Bloor St W. This is the north side, between Dunbloor Rd and Resurrection Rd. These probably won't have any utility until the...

    King Street (Streetcar Transit Priority)

Nice, and I like Z-Teca, their burritos aren't as crazy over-seasoned and expensive as other places.

    King Street (Streetcar Transit Priority)

Being curious... anyone know if there are any restaurants in the pilot area, particularly in or near restaurant row, that are openly supporting the transit pilot?

    Mississauga Hurontario-Main Line 10 LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

Well if so, that's an incredibly useless route. If they're really not going to go for Main, then might as well do Kennedy, where they have more right-of-way, and at least some density, and potential for more.

    Mississauga Hurontario-Main Line 10 LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

According to their vision document, it seems like they're not proposing the above, but an alternate 2-way route along McMurchy, then east on Queen. Where are they talking about a McLaughlin/Kennedy loop?

That 509 streetcar really gets around...

    Mississauga Hurontario-Main Line 10 LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

My understanding is that much of the more detailed station placements as well as the 403 crossing designs will be done by the consortium designing and building the line (with some input/oversight by Metrolinx and the city). Part of the PPP package.

Metrolinx: Bombardier Flexity Freedom & Alstom Citadis Spirit LRVs

Makes me wonder how much an unpowered middle unit unit would cost, if the line ever goes into into full-time 3-car operation. Basically remove the motors and cab(s), maybe half the cost? Wishful thinking... The 45-ish metre variants, or Alstom LRVs looking better now.

    Roads: Traffic Signals

I wish they would raise crossovers to sidewalk level, for an extended space out from it, so there would essentially be speed bumps to slow traffic right down. You could probably get rid of the flashing lights and buttons (so long as the crossing is well lit). Wouldn't work where there are...

    Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

Ok plan B, couple all the units together as one long train, and continually pull them around with a MP40. You can then use them as extra service for early GO RER (I call it LRERT). I see no reason why that's not 100% technically feasible...

TTC: Flexity Streetcars Testing & Delivery (Bombardier)

I agree that we should have another company build the additional streetcars, even if it takes an extra year or two. Partially because I don't want to reward Bombardier's incompetence, but also because I see vehicle diversity in a fleet this size as a good thing. Part commonality is good, but...

    Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

Well the vehicles are standard gauge, so probably lots of Metrolinx track they could be stored on... but yea, it's not really ideal before a MSF is built.

Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

My impression is that going forward, Metrolinx wants vehicles to be part of the PPP tenders for each line, so that even if we're short vehicles for future lines, those would be part of the design-built-operate contracts. Makes more sense if everything else on those lines is to be contracted out.

    TTC: Jane (LRT) RapidTO

I think a Jane service from Mt Dennis to Finch West would be interesting, since the terminals and maintenance would be there already. Would require 8 km of double track. This would work better if there was fare integration with GO/UPX to entice people who were heading downtown via Line 2, to...

    VIA Rail

I was in China, Korea, and Taiwan a few years ago, in the big cities, and trains in between, and all the signs on the transit systems and trains were also in English, most announcements too. I was very envious of their transit and heavy rail systems there, decades ahead of North America. To try...

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

LOL, if they can find a private company/consortium that wants to take that on without government money, then hey, go ahead. Good luck to all the cars trying to exit onto downtown's street grid.

    VIA Rail

Fun tip on all modern mainland Chinese trains and stations, they have free boiling water dispensers, so bring noodle cups or tea, if that's your thing (not sure about Taiwanese trains though).

    GTHA Transit Fare Integration

A hypothetical example of my above point (though not really applying to long routes), was that if St George Station was getting dangerously overcrowded, then you could put a discount reader in the middle of the Spadina Station walkway that gave people maybe a $0.25 discount for transferring...

    GTHA Transit Fare Integration

Yea I don't agree with an extra cost for downtown. However, for people making long cross-town trips, if they can avoid downtown, maybe they can get a discount. A little hard to do now, as most train service is routed through downtown, but maybe easier once the crosstown and other LRT lines are...
