    Parking Standards in New Development

My understanding is that Kitchener is seeing its first modern no-parking development, or at least its first high-profile one, under construction right now: here. It has bike parking instead, a very progressive move.

Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

It's unfortunate to hear about J&B, since downtown desperately needs more grocery locations, and can be a bit of a food desert. I'm guessing the place that's supposed to open in the ground floor of that Madison-King-Cameron-Charles block development will help since it'll have more floor area...

Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

I think there's also a big distinction between the old downtown street system which was planned in a radial continental European style, and the later suburban arterial roads planned in the 50s and 60s. The former are distinctly car unfriendly and great for pedestrians, the latter are a...

Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

The original ION section is relatively direct in following the "north-south" (not actually north or south) alignment of Kitchener and Waterloo, but the Cambridge section is really noodly. Historically speaking the Grand River Railway (the old interurban) went directly from Galt to Kitchener via...

Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

With the Region estimating Stage 2 construction in 2028 and the ridership on the 302 ION bus not being especially overwhelming (maybe it is at rush hour?), it seems likely the original line will be getting greater frequencies and longer trains sooner -- at least I hope so.

    VIA Rail

A case in point for why passenger services in Canada will never get anywhere unless either the freight lines are nationalized, or passenger-specific lines are created to cut freight out of the equation.

    TTC: Streetcar Network

All of that sounds more reasonable to me than removing stops, which is something I see argued for a lot by people who think they're pursuing LRTification.

    VIA Rail

I won't dispute that, but I'm also someone who believes that the fundamental function of transportation infrastructure should be to help transport people first and foremost. The only reason I got a Canadian economy ticket was because it was priced the same as a Northland coach ticket due to a...

    TTC: Streetcar Network

What are your thoughts on local frequent-stop services if high-ridership streetcar routes were to LRTify? In an ideal world, I feel like there would be "local" and "express" streetcars along routes like King rather than just eliminating half the stops and forcing people to walk, or ride a bus...

Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

I understand where they're coming from with the LIT (lol) scheme, but I'm extremely cynical about means testing, and eliminating all the various discounts in favour of a general low-income means-tested one annoys me. I'm friends with a few people in social services and their response is pretty...

    VIA Rail

I imagine -- despite being a (mild) railfan, I've never taken a Budd before, just because of my geography. I've heard about their reputation. I'm in a lot of Via groups and see the genuine appeal of tourism along the line, but I also wish point-A-to-point-B infrastructural ridership was taken a...

    Barrie Collingwood Railway (BCRY)

I've gradually come around to railbanking given the state of a lot of branch lines close to their demise (i.e. not suitable for passenger service). Hopefully the BCRY will see DMUs or something similar within the next 10-15 years if projects like the Simcoe County LINX route are successful. It...

    VIA Rail

I won't dispute that, but I have a ticket right now to take the Canadian in December to visit my parents for Christmas. I don't really care about riding in a Budd coach and I'd be fine with taking a modern coach and having the Budds reassigned to a route like the Sudbury-White River that sees...

Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

Co-op is a significant factor in load balancing, but not all students are at UW, and not all UW students are in co-op. Laurier and high schools are both significant factors (I don't think Laurier has co-op to such a significant extent -- I am a UW alumnus and am pretty aware of co-op dynamics...

Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

This is a really important aspect and I hope operators of future systems take note. The ION launch and bus network reconfiguration took place in late June, when most students were gone, and the people using transit were from demographics like commuters, seniors, ODSP, etc. These people who are...

Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

It looks like there's already some very interesting and possibly unique aspects to the proposed route, such as an LRT-bisected roundabout, which I'm sure will confuse drivers to my own amusement.

    Ontario Northland/Northern Ontario Transportation

Apologies if I was unclear, but I'm talking specifically about the Highway 400 corridor coach route, not the ex-Northlander coach route from Toronto to North Bay. The former is 3/day, the latter is 4/day - I've never seen route breakdowns for ridership, and I doubt that's publicly available...

    Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

A few of these people exist in Kitchener-Waterloo, but by this point are serious outliers, and a lot of them were clearly prepared to hate the LRT no matter what. The best remedy for these people is an existing line that most normal people are happy with, though unfortunately there's no easy...

    Ontario Northland/Northern Ontario Transportation

I'm glad people are keeping up the pressure, and it's just local news, but I wish there was more clarity in the article. "Muskoka-Parry Sound area" doesn't make much sense in the context of north-south routes. I'm guessing they're referring primarily about Northlander restoration/Metrolinx...

    Ontario Northland/Northern Ontario Transportation

@micheal_can in my mind the Northlander/North Bay route is a different case because the Richmond Hill line is unloved and will clearly be one of the "losers" of the GO Expansion era, while the Barrie line is one of the clear winners. Single seat rides are great and I know linear transfers are a...
