I can't believe we've invented the.... "STOLLERY STONE" !!! Sounds like something from the next Hobbit film.

This factor only comes into play when the building facing demo is of significance. And this building has no value in this area. The only factor to consider here, is in the general area of city building. We should make sure that whatever is replacing it equals or adds value in terms of this...

Why? This is neither a good piece of art, nor is entrenching any sort of shrine to this menswear store of any significance. Perhaps the owners of Stollery should have had it peeled off so they can mount it in their den or something. That's the only appropriate use of this that I can see...

That's obvious. Why you are trying to make this out as some kind of noble sentiment is what has me puzzled. Wow. I'm trying to think if your statement could be any more wrong. And the answer is...no. ha

You are correct....as long as the culling is under the direction of a natural aristocracy....not idiots.

I don't think you get it it....these aren't good quality carved limestone bits, and dating from 1930 doesn't change that. Why would you want to save them and pin them on something? I'm all for this sort of thing, but you can't just expect people to preserve every piece of junk ever...

You're right....smart planning involves every building surrounded by an equally sized surface parking lot. If only downtown were like that, we would be like........Dallas!!!! Hey...I heard a rumour that the City was going to make CF pay to have Michael Haydon reinstall his neon sculpture back...

This is the kind of thing I find bizarre. You abandoned your shopping trip because you couldn't find a parking spot.....IN A 7000+ SPACE PARKING LOT!!! ha ha ha You do know they have valet parking...right? Oh...but that's not "free" Allowing "free" parking is why Toronto is still small...

The point is that they aren't "worthwhile bits"...only that those "bits" represent an excuse by those who would thwart his plans. He's simply making a move his enemies have forced on him. If we were talking about something that actually deserved to be protected from ever being replaced, it...

I'm pretty sure it was more about the impact ESB & Rockefeller Centre had, rather than any actual physical resemblance. Your best bet in that case is to hire Stern, not Foster. But even in terms of impact, using that analogy on this project is probably a case of gross exaggeration and pure hype.

    Mayor John Tory's Toronto

It's not really the kids that get a free ride...it's the parents. Sounds like one of those "family values" ideas more popular with the born-again, pro family, anti-gay conservative movement lead by Harper. Personally, I'm tired of subsidizing every aspect of other people's interest in...

The only explanation is that the building must have been moved 20 feet south. Then they gave it a new exterior. Seems like a lot of work, but I guess it must have saved money over demolishing and building new.

Yes. I see that one as a tough call. I am in favour of preserving Yonge's inventory of victorian buildings. There's enough of them to present a context, especially if we can manage to get most of them restored to their original condition. Stollery doesn't fit this program. The Problem...

There's only one sensible way for the city to deal with the whole heritage issue that doesn't waste limited resources....and that's to learn to pick their battles....wisely. And it's the "wise" part that worries me.

The original edwardian style structure itself was never demolished...they just gave it a new generic facade when deco modern was in vogue. This happened to a ton of buildings. One example a couple blocks west shows an example of when a "remodel" can actually be better than the original...

They would only have failed if the building were worthy of preservation. Since it isn't, they have fulfilled their moral/ethical responsibility. And I like how they acted quickly to ward off some 12th hour attempt at trying to designate it. Like I said...they should be given an award. We are...

I think they should give out awards to developers that save us from bad facadisms.

Hey...perhaps it's the work of the great Jennifer Keesmaat herself!!!! Looks about her speed. Oh...BTW. I have a soft spot for 60's fieldstone bits, and I was wondering if there was any way the planning department could force the architects to incorporate them as some kind of requisite...
