    VIA Rail

I'm not sure I identify with either of these POVs. The HFR concepts would probably result in a much improved experience for Toronto to Montreal rail travellers, but it can't be denied that taking the travel time to the low 3hr mark would change this trip on a different order of magnitude. A...

Not sure where how you got that out of the Live Nation bit. They were making comparisons about the leases and giving background on how this government has been managing the space.

It's definitely limited in that its pretty hard to make more of it. There is a finite amount. Thats the core of my point. Why bulldoze a mature park when there is a massive expanse of blacktop that sits empty for most of the year directly abutting said park? Like i said, there are lots of...

I suppose if you view a park as nothing it would be hard to disagree with your point. The truth is, in a large city with limited green space, a park is a deeply important asset. In order to build a waterpark there they have to delete that asset. When that park is sitting next to the largest(?)...

All of these places have plenty of parking already is there any evidence that they will need more with the addition of the spa? There is a half square km of parking directly adjacent to Ontario Place. I would be swayed by that argument if parking was in any way at a premium at this site. It...

I don't agree with the last part. The objection, at least for me, is that the parking garage is in many ways a subsidy for Therme. There is no shortage of parking around. The point of the garage would be to service the spa. Shouldn't the people building the spa take on the risk of that...

    VIA Rail

This makes sense to me. Working backwards from a sensible position that competes with air and road travel is the only path that I can get my head around. I'm always so surprised at how stingy politicians and rail enthusiasts are when it comes to Canadian HSR. I think it's wildly overestimated...

Roads: Gardiner Expressway catch-all, incl. Hybrid Design (2015-onwards)

I had to quit this thread a while back because the response to this will be that anything that isn't a perfect copy of the gardiner is such a wildly different example that it's useless to even discuss. It's aways something about the transit being too different or the population being too big to...

Roads: Gardiner Expressway catch-all, incl. Hybrid Design (2015-onwards)

Theres always a reason that this particular highway is special.

Housing and transit projects have an immediate, fundamental, and material impact on peoples lives. Either lifting them from poverty, getting them off the streets or allowing them to travel to a job or family. The spa is essentially meaningless in this context. If it wont ruin someones life if it...

    Toronto Ontario Place | ?m | ?s | Infrastructure ON

With respect, I think it's completely inappropriate to compare this to a serious topic of housing politics. Comparing the resistance to a themepark with the resistance of badly needed housing in the middle of a major housing and homeless crisis is a) a meaningless comparison, and b) borderline...

    Toronto Therme Spa/West Island at Ontario Place | 45.15m | 9s | Therme Group | Diamond Schmitt

This is not good news for the residents of Flemingdon park that's for sure. I assume this is supposed to garner more support, but it seems to have increased the public backlash. Unless it's a satellite campus I don't see how this would be good given that the current science centre is massive...

Roads: Gardiner Expressway catch-all, incl. Hybrid Design (2015-onwards)

In the case of the Gardiner east, I believe the "hybrid" and remove options have the same number of lanes (maybe 1 less per direction), so it's not really a huge difference in capacity. However, it's worth noting that there is precedent for traffic evaporation in other cities. The embarcadero...

Roads: Gardiner Expressway catch-all, incl. Hybrid Design (2015-onwards)

According to a quick google search, the east section is about a billion and the remove is mid 400s. No one is saying it is a difference of 2B to zero. But the savings would be significant, especially if you factor in the potential for housing revenue. Not to mention the benefit of affordable...

Roads: Gardiner Expressway catch-all, incl. Hybrid Design (2015-onwards)

This is pretty far off according to the news at the time. Removal was approximately 50% less than the "hybrid" option. The other important note is that the maintenance costs are significantly cheaper and the land that is opened up creates space for major development. The development charges and...

    Agree. This makes no sense.

    Toronto Ontario Line: Osgoode Station | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | HDR

For me, the look of the building is fine. Quite nice even, but cutting off the corner of a park isn't great. (granted the fence did that, and I've always thought it should be more permeable.) And the blank walls facing the park are also bad. Really, not matter how great a building looks, the...

Roads: Gardiner Expressway catch-all, incl. Hybrid Design (2015-onwards)

The city doesn't currently have enough money to cover the budget and is asking other levels of government for a bailout. The Gardiner is taking up more space than the rest of Toronto's roads, bridges and sidewalks combined. Bankruptcy isn't a technically correct term, but it's not really...

Roads: Gardiner Expressway catch-all, incl. Hybrid Design (2015-onwards)

Difficult to say when it will actually finish, but Metrolinx says it will roll out between 2025 and 2032. The Ontario line follows the same route as the DVP, so it brings significant value to out of towners by pulling cars off that road. That said, the timing could be a disaster for period of...

Roads: Gardiner Expressway catch-all, incl. Hybrid Design (2015-onwards)

True enough, but it also not a full freeway removal. It's a 1-2km stretch of the very end, and it's expected that the capacity can be made up for. More of an in between case i suppose.
