    TTC: Other Items (catch all)

Observations- the TTC‘a new announcement chime is a welcome change from their old chime (which seems to date from the 90s). There also seems to be very few commercial advertisements on the TTC these days, and many empty advertising slots. Advertising budgets still in the pandemic mindset, or...

    Mayor Olivia Chow's Toronto

I have some doubts it will be done early on- my senses in terms of the things that could work against such a decision: Cancellation is time-sensitive, but... It could very much act as the Ford-equivalent killing of Transit City as a political lightning rod, and could estrange...

    The Toronto Tree Thread

Thanks for the essay, but I was thinking more about the two regional 'native-adjacent' trees as mentioned above in the discussion, not species not present on our continent. I.e. Black Locust whose northern range is just a few latitudes south of Ontario.

    The Toronto Tree Thread

Interesting discussion on non-native North American trees like Black Locusts and Catalpas: https://www.facebook.com/groups/204432470151845/?multi_permalinks=1310148912913523 http://www.torontogardens.com/2011/01/native-plants-prepare-to-do-some.html/...

I believe in Vancouver's subway extension, they are tunnelling and excavating the stations at the same time, and then TBMs then drive through the poured base slab of the stations.

TTC Fleet Procurement Strategy - 2022

I give that it's the columns in the plan below right? https://transittoronto.ca/subway/5505.shtml I wonder how much of a rework is possible to move those columns? Maybe cars could be paired together with a gangway between two cars with the cabs facing outwards? Then you would have three sets...

TTC Fleet Procurement Strategy - 2022

Not sure if this is the right thread to post in, but apparently the new TR order for Line 2 has been cancelled, as reported by Steve Munro and @Reecemartin ? https://stevemunro.ca/2023/06/26/ttc-cancels-rfp-for-new-subway-trains/...

    Toronto Casino Woodbine | 31.85m | 11s | One Toronto Gaming | CGL Architects

Not a bad Conservative off-ramp for the brewing PR disaster at Ontario Place- there certainly is plenty of space to fit these sorts of buildings, and synergistic potential with the other adjacent potential entertainment venues (though they would need to be bumped up in terms of their timelines)...

    Hamilton FirstOntario Centre Renovations | ?m | 4s | OVG | BBB

@CanadianNational - To add to this, I think it would be worth contacting Jason Thorne, who leads city planning in Hamilton- I wonder if he may be receptive to any comments?

    Hamilton FirstOntario Centre Renovations | ?m | 4s | OVG | BBB

Agreed that the proposed space is suboptimal for any cultural purposes, and if lost to development, will be lost for our lifetimes.

None of these seem all that desirable IMO. Honestly it would be better to move towers 2 and 3 to the location of towers 4 and 5 and compensate with additional density, rather than permanently infilling the former plaza site.

    Laneway and Garden Houses (various)

I wonder if along with the new zoning changes permitting for multiplexes, if Toronto should follow in the footsteps of LA and provide a selection of standardized designs to help speed along the process?

Toronto St Lawrence Market North | 25.3m | 5s | City of Toronto | Rogers Stirk Harbour

Given that the roof is going to be landscaped and that these HVAC covers will be highly visible, I wonder if there wasn’t an opportunity to make them more playful- possibly even kinetic?

    Toronto Tech Boom

Interesting- I wonder how this stacks up to Canadian emigration to the US? Perhaps this is evident of uneven visa policies (Canada is easier for international graduates, the US is easier for Canadian citizens)...

    PM Justin Trudeau's Canada

I do not think there is any coming back from this, not to the extent like before. If there is a path, it will be narrow and require enormous political skill to pull off, which I don't see in its current political class. The US is re-industrializing at Europe's expense, while Europe on the whole...

Downtown Decline - Future of Toronto's Downtown Core

One interesting term I've heard recently is the 'doom loop' specifically referring to San Francisco- where issues of homelessness, crime/safety, budgetary deficits, and unaffordability repeatedly compound to make cities unlivable. Overall though, I believe that some of these issues caused by San...

    PM Justin Trudeau's Canada

Personally I think that the trajectory for Europe is somewhat unfavourable, as the US pulls its vassals inwards during this era of entrenchment against China and Russia, and at the core of it lies the long death of German manufacturing (pushed along post-Nordstream), which has long underpinned...

    Toronto Toronto Coach Terminal Redevelopment | ?m | ?s | CreateTO

Personally I hope they will keep the stonework of the bus bays rather doing any 'interpretation' or removing them completely: https://goo.gl/maps/Moe5Bj2XMeHRnBK4A

    Markham Remington Centre | ?m | 33s | Remington Group | Kohn

Agreed with this point, the two malls were often a two-for-one draw for trips. As the area has developed, many new strip malls have popped up in the former industrial zone running down Midland to Finch, so there is also less of a draw to the mall. I think that Pacific Mall will be gone in a...
