    VIA Rail

Going from 110mph to 125mph is great, but I'm really hoping there's a concrete plan to address the super slow sections of the corridors, particularly in urban areas. Imagine if the speed on sections of track between say Ottawa and Fallowfield could be doubled. The crawl out of Ottawa station is...

    Transit Fantasy Maps

It is, but it's nowhere the size of a Hamilton or a Kitchener. The population and ridership in Durham is pretty evenly distributed between the 4 stations there. Oshawa may have the slight lead currently because it's the EOL and sees a lot of drive-in traffic from further east, something that...

    Transit Fantasy Maps

I like the format, it's clean and easy to read. A few comments though: 1) It's unlikely that the local service would extend all the way out to Bowmanville. If anything, the service would be layered, with routes running local on the outer stretches (say Bowmanville to Pickering), and then...

    GO Transit Electrification | Metrolinx

That was my thinking too. The Bombardier Bi-Level is such a great design that it has become almost the defacto rolling stock choice for new commuter rail services in North America. I'm sure a metro area looking to either start a service or expand upon a minimal service (thinking SunRail or...

    GO Transit Electrification | Metrolinx

If Metrolinx wants to move away from the 12-car behemoths though, during peak periods they may get pretty close to every 3.5 minutes! Pre-COVID, LSW was sub 10-minutes at some times, and that's with 12-car trains. A shift to 6-car trains pulled by electric locomotives would mean double the...

    VIA Rail

Any idea on what qualifies as "new track" in this report? Is it new ROW that is required? I'm assuming that laying new track in abandoned corridors doesn't count as "new track", since the Havelock Sub is significantly longer than that. Would laying new track next to an existing track qualify...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

Exactly. Even with the inner portions of many lines approaching subway-level frequencies (or at least subway-level frequencies in most other parts of the world), the outer portions of the lines will still be getting pretty substantial frequency boosts, with most of those runs still running...

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

Yup, pretty close. While technically the 401 does dip south of the 403 in the southwest, I would think they would stick with 20 just to be consistent with Quebec's A-20. I also wouldn't give the 427 a '5' number, since it's mostly within the GTA, and doesn't extend beyond it.

    Finch West Line 6 LRT

I wasn't aware of that! Was the signalling changed when they opted for different trains? Or was that decision made even before that switch?

    Finch West Line 6 LRT

I believe part of the reason for the grey as well is to make the trains "brand agnostic". Metrolinx didn't want the trains in TTC red, but also didn't want them in Metrolinx black or GO green or whatever. Grey is muted, and can be applied universally across all Metrolinx-operated LRT lines...

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

That would work too. Certainly some continuity between 407 and 7 would be welcome. The only issue I potentially see with that is that most people associate 407 with tolled, so having a free section of the 407 connecting to a tolled section may be confusing for people, as they may incorrectly...

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

Yup, that was my "it sort of did at one point" comment. The initial 1920s numbering made sense (except for Highway 11), but when the added the next round of routes the whole thing just became a jumbled mess. Quebec did a complete renumbering in the 70s, and their system makes total sense.

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

Yup, agreed. I'm just saying that by and large Ontario's highway numbering system doesn't follow any sort of discernible pattern (it sort of did at one point, but over time that's gotten lost), so it's really tough to tell what MTO actually intended the highway to be. At least in the US you can...

    Finch West Line 6 LRT

I'd probably trench it from Queens Plate to just south of Rexdale, then have it run at-grade until near the Woodbine GO station. I agree grade separating makes total sense, but I don't think it's worth the expense to trench when there's nothing to go under. From Humber College to Queens Plate...

Roads: Highway 407 East (Durham Region)

It was probably just one guy walking on the side of the highway with a wheelbarrow full of smartphones :).

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

Very interesting! I always figured that if the 400-series standard was carried further east, that it would cross Hwy 7 at the current 7/115 intersection, and then veer eastward, running parallel to but north of the existing Hwy 7. I wonder what the rationale is for going around Peterborough on...

    Finch West Line 6 LRT

I would actually continue it on the west side of Hwy 27. There's quite a bit of space between Hwy 27 and Brockport Dr, and that would avoid a complete reconstruction of Hwy 27 to accommodate. It would also be making a westward turn at Dixon, so side-running would avoid having to reconstruct that...

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

Agreed on all counts except 115 to 415. I know it's not likely, but I would think MTO is reserving that for any type of upgrade along the Hwy 15 corridor. I would imagine they would go with 428, since it somewhat parallels the former Hwy 28 corridor. The existing Provincial Hwy 28 could even be...

    Finch West Line 6 LRT

With respect to UPX, I suspect that once some sort of RER service on the Kitchener Line gets implemented, we will see UPX stopping at Union, Bloor, Eglinton, Woodbine, and then Pearson. Weston will likely get dropped, as it doesn't have any type of connection to an RT line, whereas the other...

Province of Ontario - Electric Vehicle Rebates & Charger Program

For condos, even Level 2 chargers would work. I really don't see the need to include DC fast chargers in condo buildings, because most of the vehicles will be parked for long lengths of time. I charge my PHEV on a Level 1 charger in my garage, and it suits my needs just fine. I have it set to...
