GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

Consistency of arrival time is a pretty good selling point I think. You're much more likely to hit the bus-train meet in Mississauga, with the train much more likely to reach Union on time than the bus would be. I haven't taken a look at the pre and post truncation schedules to verify, but has...

GO Transit: Union Station Shed Replacement & Track Upgrades (Zeidler)

I really like that platform layout. Assuming these will be the Lakeshore platforms, it makes it really easy to have the island platform be for the Lakeshore trains. Through-running trains can use the portion that continues west or east, while the short-turning trains (be they express, or special...

    Transit Fantasy Maps

I had proposed something similar way back when, but my proposal had the station box angled on a SW-NE angle, going right through what is now CIBC Square (but was an empty parking lot at the time). This would have enabled a westward extension of the Yonge Line under Lake Shore to a new station in...

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

Agreed. This is something in US interstate design that always bothered me, especially on mainlines. They do this on ramps too though. If two lanes need to merge into one lane, the lane on the right should merge into the lane on the left, not the other way around.

Ontario Line Extension West of Ontario Place (Speculation)

Sherway is tough to serve with a through line though, because it would be an awkward curve in and out. Personally, I think it would be better served with an extension of Line 2. There are some examples of elevated median infrastructure going over top of overpasses. Here's an example from the...

Ontario Line Extension West of Ontario Place (Speculation)

Interesting idea, though I'd be tempted to use the 427 instead of the Kipling Hydro corridor. The constructability challenges would be similar, but there's a lot more ridership potential along the 427 corridor. Going to Bramalea City Centre is an interesting idea though.

Ontario Line Extension West of Ontario Place (Speculation)

Here's what I envision for the western end of the OL: Exhibition to Humber Bay Loop: Within LSW ROW Humber Bay Loop to Canpa Sub: Elevated within median of the Gardiner. This would provide connectivity to the densifying (and could densify even further) lands on either side of the Gardiner...

FastLane: Gil Penalosa’s transit platform for Toronto

I don't think that any of these BRT plans necessarily preclude LRT in the future, especially if what is built is more pre-BRT. If anything, it may actually make LRT easier to implement. It could be very wise to take a piecemeal approach to these BRTs, with curbside BRT lanes. Step 1: Rebuild...

GO Transit: Union Station Shed Replacement & Track Upgrades (Zeidler)

Dupont may solve the 'subway crowding' issue, but it doesn't solve the 'need to transfer to get anywhere' issue. Definitely useful as an express crosstown route though. For your 2nd point, it might be feasible to extend the OL at least one stop further north and put a station at Barber Greene...

GO Transit: Union Station Shed Replacement & Track Upgrades (Zeidler)

I believe that's what Exhibition, East Harbour, and to a lesser extent Front-Spadina are supposed to do. The former two will feature direct connections to the Ontario Line, which will help divert some of the ridership that currently heads into Union and either walks up to the CBD, or transfers...

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Sounds like this will be one of the first applications of Metrolinx's new 'station integration' policy (aka the reason why Confederation GO was sent back to the drawing board after DoFo & Co took over). Should be interesting to see what comes of it, and Confederation GO.

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

With only hourly service, it's much harder to respond to an increase in running time without adding another train, especially when you're looking at a route cycle time of around 4 hours (assuming thru-running between LSE and LSW). When you're running 15 min headways and running times increase as...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

It may very well actually be both. There may be some kind of track restriction around Port Credit in the evenings that caused Metrolinx to add another couple minutes to the schedule. If trains continued to West Harbour, that may have extended the run time past what could reasonably be...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

Things have been quiet on the Confederation GO front for a while. I wonder if he chose Niagara Falls because it encapsulates the entire corridor. Tendering all the station work for the extension/expansion/service increase in one package may make sense.

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Thanks for these! By the looks of it, 3 tracks expandable to add a 4th track on the outside of the east platform? Makes sense for a location that will likely be a short-turn location for Stouffville RER. I like that Metrolinx seems to be doing more of these "side platform, with an option to...

Roads: Highway 407 East (Durham Region)

To be fair, if the RIRO gap on the 35/115 was upgraded to 400-series standard, it's quite possible that the 407 (untolled) designation would be applied to the 115 route to Peterborough, since that route is already a 400-series standard. That way there would be a direct connection between Hwy 7...

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

The bridge at Southdown/Erin Mills Pkwy looks like it was also built to accommodate at least 1 extra lane in each direction. I don't know the exact timing of when that bridge was rebuilt, but if I had to guess probably in the '00s? Once the new Credit River Bridge is done, they should be able...

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

True, good point. The RHVP to EB QEW does dump quite a bit of volume into the right lanes on the QEW though, which all have to merge at around the same point that the QEW through lanes are reducing as well. The RHVP lanes don't even touch the QEW through lanes until past Lake Ave, just after the...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

To me, this potentially warrants a 'shuttle' route that just runs back and forth between Kitchener and Guelph all day, supplementing the Toronto-bound service on the line. Even more so once Breslau station comes online. It wouldn't need to be a 12-car hulk, maybe a 6-car train. Based on...

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

It does, for sure. The Linc-Red Hill combo is frequently used as a bypass route for truckers looking to get from the EB 403 to the Niagara-bound QEW. Commuter traffic is generally Skyway-bound in the AM and upbound in the PM, but the truck traffic is generally opposite of that, going to and from...
