Downtown Grocery Store List (current + proposed)

Stock TC at the former Pusateris space in Yorkville has a tentative opening of Spring 2027.

The new location will also include a second-floor private dining room for smaller gatherings and special occasions.

Any new food store will be welcome in the area, but so close to Eataly, this concept might be a bit redundant. I visited their original store last summer and came out empty-handed (then again I can't eat wheat, so I stay clear of prepared foods).

Yeah, although I think Stock TC are a good tenant for that space, they do feel redundant being a couple blocks away from Eataly. The latter are also arguably the bigger name in the elevated Italian grocery, prepare meals, food market. Aside from Pusateri's internal mismanagement, Eataly's emergence at Bay & Bloor also lead to their eventual downfall in this area. Hope Stock TC operate with more competence, and with greater density with all these newer developments in Yorkville they can carve out a further niche in the local market.

This is not no in downtown, or in Toronto at all, though, some variation may be sometime sooner.

As per Retail-Insider, this is the 'new look' No Frills, in Komoka, ON (just outside London)

From the above:

From there, the interior is no less eye-catching, for hard discount, they spent real $$$

Vaulted ceiling, wood toned beams, warm directional lighting.

Also notable, a selection of par-baked items:

It looks like a Loblaws with bright yellow signs?

Not quite.

Yellow not orange on the inside.

No service counters (butcher, floral, bakery juice/cut fruit, deli etc.)

But yeah, its definitely got a more upmarket vibe.

That is a gorgeous NO Frills. Looking forward to seeing more of this design. Hope we see the interior design here in remodeled Toronto stores. Obviously the build design will be for new ones.

Dufferin Grove is spoiled with choice - both local No Frills stores are huge and have butcher/fish counters.

As noted by others above, any service counters in NF are almost always 3rd party. Its a curious arrangement, but there ya go. Where offered, it does lead to fairly wide variation in selection/quality.

Pavao Meats is a solid local butcher. In summer I frequently go to the main location at Dundas and Gladstone to pick up delicious stuff to barbecue! 🥲

The City of Toronto wants to get into the grocery business, council decided today.

Taking a page from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Toronto will look into opening four non-profit, city-run grocery stores, which would sell staple goods at prices lower than those of grocery giants like Loblaws and Sobeys.

According to the motion put forward by Councillor Anthony Perruzza, the city would open four grocery stores, one for each of Etobicoke, North York, downtown and Scarborough, and in low-income areas where fresh groceries are hard to come by.
