Pizzeria Badiali is taking over the former Victory Cafe space I see.. a shame Westbank couldn't get Victory Cafe back into that spot!
The current location is on Bloor where they seem very busy with tons of foot traffic. There's no telling how busy Markham St is going to be when it opens up, or how long it will take for all the retail to open. Badiali creates its own traffic so they might be less worried.

Does anyone know what's happening in that small laneway off Lennox where the micro-retail units are?
If you are hoping to lease a unit, you are in luck! lol

Both these resources, while I am not sure how updated they are, seem to show these units have not been spoken for.
Realtor.ca actually has 5 or 6 listings each representing several of these micro-retail units. Perhaps potential tenants
want to wait for the laneway to open before signing anything.

Is their pizza really the cat's meow? I saw a huge lineup at their outpost on Dovercourt a few weeks ago in lousy weather (not shocking in this town 🤣 )

I have never been to Pizzeria Badiali but Victory Cafe was one of my favourite resto/pubs in the City. It was a place that is hard to replace.

Agreed - went there twice many years ago (once with a buddy, once on a semi-wild first date) and it had a cool vibe. Their new location is ok, but it doesn't capture the feel of the original (that seems to be common for any place that moves).

I was a regular at the original location for *many* years, very different vibe, especially the upstairs. A childhood chum from my old neighbourhood used to bartend there. And the late Paul Humphrey from Blue Peter was a waiter there (perhaps a part-owner, I'm not sure). The "new" one is fine for what it is, but I was always a Kilgour's guy (now mostly Pauper's, but I go back to the James Joyce and Las Iguanas for old Annex hands. Runt, who painted Lee's Palace, I run into now and then as we had mutual friends).

I've heard that they're roughly 50% leased.

Its always a treat when you pop in, whether with good information such as above, or just to say 'hi'.

Hopefully we'll see you sooner than another 3 months!

I appreciate the warm welcome back! I haven't really gone anywhere but the rigours of life have definitely drawn my attention away over the last few years. You can expect to see me around more often going forward.

Totally understand the nostalgia around Victory Cafe. It was a great spot and hard to replace. That said, from a commercial leasing and development standpoint, bringing back a former tenant 10 to 12 years after a project begins is extremely difficult. Operators evolve, economics change, and timelines rarely line up.

Badiali is also an easy brand to criticize because expectations are so high, but they have built something genuinely strong and lasting. More importantly, for a quieter street, having a true destination operator is critical. A brand that people will intentionally travel for helps activate the area and ultimately benefits the broader project.

I think Badiali is a good fit and likely a strong addition here.

also my understanding that Wesbank is now 100% removed from this project and their partner, BC-Based, Peterson Group is in charge of completing the construction and managing the commercial component. truly not sure if this will speed up the process of if it'll remain relatively slow as its been in recent years on Westbank projects

Correct.

The former - no question.
