President Donald Trump's United States of America

I don't think the MAGA folks feel embarrassed about him...

That’s why it’s so embarrassing. When the dumbest and most cruel amongst you are leading your country, then that’s who you are as a country. Trump wasn’t just a fluke, he represents what the United States has become and that’s deeply embarrassing for everyone else who has to live in it and identify as an American.

The reality is Americans cannot accept the fact they are no longer the best in the world.

They have been superceded by the EU and China on the global stage but remain in denial.

As the saying goes... they are laughing at you not with you.

While I'm not sure Trump is going to get fully impeached and removed from office before he kicks the can, I'm starting to think we could see a situation where he resorts to petulantly pocket vetoing everything and congress has to pass veto-proof two-thirds bi-artisan legislation just to get anything done.

I'm sure the irony would be completely lost on Republican voters however.

I think they've always been like that. Look at how reluctant they were to join WW2 and how many nazis they gave jobs to after.

Unconfirmed rumour is 2 dead.

"Preliminary, though unconfirmed, information suggests that the Air Canada flight may have collided with a fire engine while it was landing."

The AirTraffic Controller can be heard admitting on radio to screwing up. The fire truck was directed across the active runway and the AC Express jet hit it.

The pilots are indeed dead, one of the flight attendants was ejected, still belted in to her jump seat. 41 were taken to hospital, 9 remain in hospital this morning.

How tragic for everyone involved.

I don't think Trump has a concept of how many people will celebrate his death.
I'm hoping that Joe Biden gets to live to attend Trump's funeral. Extra points if Joe walks in unaided, aviators on, with swagger.

I am just grateful everyone is ok. That said this could not have happened in a worse location. Somewhere like Billings, Montana would be less of an issue like Laguardia for example.

I do hope however that given the prominent location and deaths involved that someone will not only get fired but that the GOP will wake up and smell the Coffee. The FAA needs proper funding and oversight (along with many other Government Departments).

These political games Trump plays while they likely had no impact on the current situation certainly do not help matters.

As much as Canadians may hate it, they still are. The US leads the world in the following:

Largest Economy (Nominal GDP) at $27+ trillion GDP (bigger than the next few countries combined)
Global Reserve Currency Dominance. 58–60% of global reserves held in USD
Equity Market Size & Influence. U.S. stock markets are the largest in the world, with 60%+ of global equity market cap
Venture Capital & Startup Ecosystem. The U.S. attracts more VC funding than any other country
Labor Productivity (among large economies). Very high GDP per worker
Consumer Market Size. Largest high-income consumer market, Huge internal demand (less export-dependent than many countries)
Energy Production. The U.S. is the world’s largest oil and natural gas producer
Higher Education & Research Output. Leads in research funding (even in these Trumpian times) and Nobel Prizes
Largest High-Income Population. The U.S. has the largest population living at high income levels
Top destination for immigrants. Even in these Trump days, the US is home to over 50 million immigrants.

They have been superceded by the EU and China on the global stage but remain in denial.
Not on GDP per capita and the other measures above they haven't.

Not that I think the US is all that, nor that the EU and China are not catching up (for example, China now leads in global patents), but we Canadians cannot smugly think that Trump's 2nd term is an indication that the US is in rapid decline.
