There is absolutely no good reason to have TTC announcements in French.

I hate to break it to you, but they are apparently looking into it because the two extensions of the subway will be in both languages, and they don't want to have people confused about why one part is in English only, and another is bilingual.

I don’t know why Anglo Ontarians get so up in arms about it. I’ve seen complaining about it here, Reddit, CPTDB, etc. Canada has two official languages. It is not a big deal. Other countries have multiple official languages too.

I think a big issue is that Quebec doesn't really return the courtesy, as others have said. Not just with transit announcements, but with signage in general (unlike in Ontario where provincial signage is always bilingual)

Line 5 voice announcement and all way-finding signs are both English and French because this line along with line 6 are owned by Metrolinx which belongs to the Ontario government and all Ontario and Canada government owned buildings must have both languages.

I remember when announcements were first implemented on Mississauga buses, they were not automated, it was the drivers doing them. Sometimes they would yell or sing sarcastically. It's just an accessibility issue, I am happy to not be one of those who suffers from blindness, so I won't complain too much. More verbose announcements helping those in need, I can endure it. Maybe using a train seems easy and simple for us, but maybe it is not same for everyone.

It was like that in Toronto too, except that sometimes customers and drivers would get into furious arguments over it! Customers would remind the drivers it's a TTC rule that they have to call out all the stops, the driver would say tell me your stop and I'll call it when we get there, customers would insist all other stops must be called out too. I wouldn't mention this if I only saw it once, but I saw it dozens of times. I wouldn't be surprised if a certain newspaper was rallying its readers to do this as some kind of protest.

I'm gonna guess that Doug Ford's anti-bike lanes crusade (Bill 212) has put the kibosh on that, or at least ground it to a stop while the courts deal with Ford's appeal. The city wouldn't want to start spending money on something that's got a decent chance of being ripped out (be it the less-likely win in court, or Ford using the Notwithstanding Clause to get his way).

That said, they could paint a bicycle gutter at someone lower risk, but who knows how this capricious province will respond to that.

Actually, Phase 1 of eglintonTOday was already underway by the time Bill 212 was introduced, so it should be exempt. Phase 2 from Mt Pleasant to Brentcliffe is another matter, however.

It might be legally exempt now, but I bet that would change if the city tried to change it. Best to not mention it and keep it low profile until Ford is gone.

I thought the "underway" exemption was for projects that literally had their construction contract issued already? Or did Phase 1 already have that?

Avenue to Chaplin - which was part of eglintonTOday Phase 1 - was installed in 2024 before Bill 212 was introduced.

Ford has already mentioned removing existing lanes on major streets outside of 212, so I wouldn't consider it exempt.
