Via reporter Colin D'Mello, Premier Doug Ford is set to announce a "renovation" of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Mods: I didn't see an existing MTCC building thread. Please feel free to merge if necessary.

I'm so confused by this :) As you said it is owned by Oxford ... so maybe a joint deal ? But why would the province fund such a thing ?

This has been rumoured for years. I'm surprised we haven't heard of it sooner. I suspect the Province is going to subsidize an expansion as an economic development tool.

My bet is that it's built over the rail corridor - A convention centre is actually a great air rights use over the corridor as it is lightweight (no extreme structural hurdles) and relies on large floorplates. You could get close to 500,000ft of space on a single level over the rail corridor, north convention centre, and south convention centre entrance property.

You might be on to something.... ;)

This is why Innsertname here should roll out of bed by 7am again..... he can get UT talking when he does.... but ever since hybrid flex work.......he often naps til noon.

Part of this may be the announcement of TIFF’s Marketplace going here which has, apparently, been settled.

I don't really see the relation ? The TIFF marketplace is starting this year (and yes will be utilizing the convention center) - given it's the very first year, why would the issue be they need a lot more space already ... hard to believe :) Unless they are projecting out years in the future and attempting to anticipate growth.

No insider info here FYI - I'm completely guessing.. I think I've just gotten pretty good at guessing over the years..

For the record, as is so often the case, I have not seen any renders here, and don't have the full picture, I simply have an awareness of some of the things discussed, though my info is a few months stale at this point, so we'll have to see how it holds up. '
Also.... you are a pretty good guesser, most days.

Great idea. And it goes without saying (though I'm sayin' it)... a green roof: mix of public parks and sports park.

A reminder of what could have been. I think it was the correct move to turf the casino aspect of the development, but never getting the F+P towers was a tragedy. I doubt we will see any office towers proposed, given Oxford hasn't been even able to move on The HUB for years now, but I do think this would be a great opportunity for incorporating some very large hotel towers. It will be interesting to see if the scope extends to where Oxford's Union Park development is currently proposed, or if they will leave that area alone.
