Any thoughts on our speed skaters or aerial skiiers? This thread is so Canadian - dozens of sports to discuss yet 99% of the talk in here is about hockey, which we see on tv all the time anyway![]()

Maybe that was CBC’s Littlest Hobo going for the win?Meanwhile...
oh yeah, Canada is in 6th place for qualifying.
Can’t relate - the predictability bores me to tears.Isn't this forum filled with Canadians? You were expecting it to be Mexican, or Nigerian?
Sports that get the most attention will be those where Canada is in contention to medal. (Hockey is in this group) along with those most relate to because they watch, play or have played. You won't see the same focus on winter biathlon (Skiing and shooting) since it doesn't get much tv coverage and most people have never done those two together.

Wow. I assumed it would have been a slashing type injury like you sometimes see in hockey but that was an impact with the heel of a blade. In the women’s 1500m short track qualifications 3 skaters went down in a corner, the race kept going but half a lap later they stopped the race. CBC initially showed the replay at the same time it was shown in the venue… slow-mo showing the Polish skater taking a blade to the face and getting cut just below the eye. Could hear the entire place gasp in shock. CBC’s team must have realized it was a bad idea because they never showed it again and never went to a camera of the injured skater. Apparently there was blood all over the ice.
I’m sure bad injuries are rare but not totally unprecedented thing for participants but for normies like me it was horrifying. There are replays online but I don’t recommend watching if you’re at all squeamish
A CBC reporter posted online,
“I just interviewed one of the member of the Polish coaching staff. He tells me he believes Kamila Sellier suffered a facial fracture in the crash.“
In one of the 1500m women’s semifinal heats there were a ton of falls out of nowhere, including Canada’s Courtney Sarault who was in 2nd position with a few laps to go. Apparently it was the hottest day of the games in Milan and the short track ice is deteriorating, which is also used for figure skating. One of the Dutch skaters (was in the lead!) who fell could be heard saying the ice was cracking. Making for very dramatic races!
The one thing I will credit the winter Olympics for is being creative, or perhaps responsive to sport, in their events. The obvious examples of this are the ski and snowboard events. That's fine. I'm not watching the Olympics at all. Not my thing.
But I wouldn't demonizes those for whom it is a thing. Being into Biathlon is not better, nor is it worse.
The men's teams were basically swapping hammers until the 9th end.Incredible day for Canada in curling. The woman won bronze after starting the games 1 win 3 losses, and men just won GOLD! The men only had a 30% chance of winning going into the 9th end. Both games were extremely tense and came right down to the very last stone in the 10th end.
Crazy to see so much attention on curling because it of the controversy. I’ve seen references and memes in places I’d never expect. A new professional league, Rock League is starting this year with a tournament in Toronto. There will be 6 mixed gender teams made up of pros from worldwide, many Olympians. Seems like they’re going for a more upbeat and boisterous atmosphere similar to big darts tournaments. Will be interesting to see if so many more eyes on the sport translates to a noticeable increase in viewership.
I did a learn to curl day at East York CC at Cosburn and Woodbine a couple of years back. They have a dedicated rink with 4 sheets. The men's teams were basically swapping hammers until the 9th end.
Curling is still a big deal in rural Canada. I'm not sure there is a town that doesn't have at least a 2-sheet rink. I don't know what club costs are in urban areas. It's a specialized ice surface that doesn't readily interchange with other ice uses. Increased interest can't hurt.
I guess I will do an all nighter if I want to see the game from New Zealand. I think it starts at like 2am Monday!Canada vs. USA for the Men's Hockey Gold Medal.
Bright and early at 8 AM ET on Sunday.
Could this be the most watched event in Canadian history?
To this day a military service and training stint is still mandatory for men in Finland, I think six months minimum by the time you are 25 years-old.Biathalon obviously has a nordic military heritage. I watched 'ski mountaineering' which seems like an interesting combination of uphill skiing - on x-c skiis, stair climbing and downhill skiing - on x-c skiies.
Canada had many chances in the game, and they were the better team in periods 2 and 3. 3 on 3 in OT made the finish seem more random. Hellebuyck was the difference in the game. The Americans won gold in men's ice hockey in overtime:
Crosby had to sit out for Canada for that game due to injury:
Only if Crosby weren't injured would Canada be more likely to win the gold.
