There has been "talk" about the Pearson Transit Hub since 2015. See https://urbantoronto.ca/forum/threads/toronto-pearson-transit-hub-m-s-gtaa.21541/post-1009854
None of the extensions I listed would be surface transit. After the experience on Eglinton, I'm not sure how much mileage there is out of buying votes by building surface transit.
Back in Sept 2024 the GTAA submitted a brief to the House of Commons commitee on Transport to advocate that a stop at Pearson airport at a new multi-modal hub be included as part of the VIA HFR (now ALTO) project. Have they indicated otherwise since then? The whole reason why it doesn't currently go to the airport is because the airport isn't currently interested with in more rapid transit connection.
And have scraped plans for a transit hub.
The Portlands literally needs the WWLRT to have its many parcels of land be unlocked for development. Given that the province is a stakeholder in Waterfront Toronto, I have to imagine it finally getting the attention of QP before 2030.It's more likely that the next batch of projects announced by the Ford Government are:
27 km of new rapid transit in critically close ridings within Toronto like Don Valley North, Don Valley East, Scarborough Centre, Scarborough-Agincourt, Willowdale & York Centre. The Eglinton West LRT Airport Extension is just logical and inevitable as well. I don't see this government backing LRT's or LRT extensions, but we'll see. Anything is possible.
- Ontario Line North Extension (Eglinton to Steeles ~10.6 km)
- Sheppard East Extension (Don Mills to McCowan / STC ~7.4 km)
- Sheppard West Extension (Yonge to Sheppard West ~4.4 km)
- Eglinton West LRT Airport Extension (Renforth to YYZ ~4.7 km)
I thought this was already green lit, wasn't it? Aren't they rebuilding the Queen's Quay station at Union to accommodate the WWLRT?The Portlands literally needs the WWLRT to have its many parcels of land be unlocked for development. Now I'm not saying that Renforth station is going to beat or exceed Kipling by any means but Renforth station is in a major employment centre of Mississauga (the Airport Corporate Centre) with a myriad of bus connections already in place.
Perhaps the Mississauga Transitway will see a boost in ridership once the Western Extension of Line 5 is complete?Renforth will attract lots of new riders from central/northern Mississauga switching from Line 2. I expect Cedarvale station will become a major transfer point just from them.
The province / Metrolinx wants nothing to do with the WWLRT or EELRT and both will be 100% finance by the city if they get built with some hope that they will get some money from the federal government as well. The Portlands literally needs the WWLRT to have its many parcels of land be unlocked for development. If they changed the design of EELRT (i.e. full grade separation), would the Province come on board? The province / Metrolinx wants nothing to do with the WWLRT or EELRT and both will be 100% finance by the city if they get built with some hope that they will get some money from the federal government as well.
I think 2031… On paper.Today I learned that this extension is actually happening. I thought it was one of those mythical Toronto one-of-these-days when we get transit capital budget this might be what we build.
So when is the west extension expected to open? 2045?
Wait until you hear about the Ontario Line!Today I learned that this extension is actually happening. I thought it was one of those mythical Toronto one-of-these-days when we get transit capital budget this might be what we build.
Or the Scarborough Busway Construction (portion of the former Scarborough RT route). The city can finance both lines by itself ( one at a time) so the lack federal or provincial money will not kill these lines. If they changed the design of EELRT (i.e. full grade separation), would the Province come on board?
Will the City just waste money on preliminary design when they know they will never obtain enough money from Feds alone to build this?
