Does tolling the 401 make it unfair to the drivers who use it to go from London to Kingston, or the traffic going from Montreal to Windsor? Yes tolling 401 and adding more transit options for the traffic users originating and traveling within the GTA would be the best option, but we need to remember that this freeway serves a vital transportation corridor to and from vast distances far from the GTA borders

There are 3 tolled freeways/ freeway sections in Canada I would love to see eliminated. the 407, a section of Quebec Autoroute 30, and a section of Nova Scotia Highway 104

Why don't we just mandate WFH 1 day a week for jobs where it's able?

How do you figure that would legislatively work? The Covid work from home mandate at least had a public health basis.

If we're going to veer into the fantasy of buying parts of the 407, I'd buy the part through Oakville/Burlington and renumber it 403, as it was supposed to be.

Recent discussion of ring roads got me to realize that central Durham (Whitby, Oshawa, Courtice) has a freeway ring road via 401, 418, 407 and 412.

I suspect it is a cultural aversion - and political Kryptonite - to apply a user fee for something built with public money, particularly for something that was once free. We seem to accept user fees for something we physically get; a driver's licence, passport, etc. The US seems more amenable to them because their taxes are comparatively lower.

They are more common basically in every other western country. Canada is the only country that really avoids them and where they are completely politically toxic.
