Though both the City and Hydro deny all ownership of that pole, I am 99% sure it was erected to support temporary streetlights about a decade ago so it was likely erected by Hydro. As nobody seems to think they own it, it gets no 'maintenance' and if it were to 'fall over' would presumably not be replaced. I like the beaver idea but the pole looks as though it was soaked in creosote so it may not taste too good!

There's an even chance it might go. They have to dig up that space to build the bollards though I would not put it past the contractor to dig around it and charge the city extra for the work instead of the city just taking it down to prepare the space. This is after all the city that cannot coordinate with Toronto Hydro and even its own internal departments to avoid digging up just finished work. Oh, the delights of bureaucracy.

So who does maintenance and inspects this pole? I assume someone has to every so often

Anything that involves a car is just going to make the city put a hundred more jersey barriers up, I propose one of these:

Or just get the guy who keeps cutting down speed cameras, since apparently you can just do that over and over again without recourse.

Fantastic so the street will continue to look like trash for decades to come. Nice 👍🏼

If the cost to keep repainting the blocks gets someone's attention, I could see them being removed sometime in the future. Most likely, they'll put something on top to prevent people from sitting on them and doodling, maybe planters, which honestly was the obvious solution on day one and would have saved them millions of dollars to procure and install the blocks.

These blocks can be spec’d with planters and seating, as well as different finishes. We’re just cheap asses.

Surprisingly this doesn't completely thwart beavers. Utility poles aren't a favourite, but beavers have taken a few, that were pressure-treated and/or soaked in one of the standard preservatives.

The main factor for whether a beaver will consider it, proximity to the body of water its living in.

Which, on its face would seem to preclude this pole from being gnawed down, but if someone stuffed up the already not very effective drains in the moat, who knows who might move in..... LOL

Side note, beavers harvest more wood in fall than any other season.
