Restaurant Comings & Goings

The Annex will soon welcome the second location of Pizzeria Badiali, as part of the Mirvish Village development, where Honest Ed’s once stood. Mirvish Village will integrate a new park and The Kitchen, food hall and music venue, an extensive public realm, micro-retail, 24 restored heritage buildings, unique restaurants and shops as well as numerous indoor and outdoor performance and gathering spaces all interwoven with public art installations including a mural by artist Frank Stella.

But, even more than ribs and brisket, Toronto loves a good deal. To mark the occasion, sous-chef Taylor Wells has rolled out a playful lineup of $12 dinner specials—a greatest-hits curation of the restaurant’s most popular dishes and drinks from the past 12 years.

The discounted snacks include the Korean fried cauliflower (a menu staple since day one), shishito peppers (also one of 2014’s hottest food trends) and a half-dozen freshly shucked oysters.

Specially priced cocktails span crowd favourites and bar classics. There’s the Black Mamba Margarita (a moody twist on the tropical drink made with charcoal-infused tequila), the Pit-Fired Old Fashioned, the Smoking Manhattan, and the bright and bubbly Tokyo Breeze. Select whiskey pours—including Pike Creek double-barrelled, Gooderham and Worts, and J. P. Wiser’s 10-year—are also just $12, as is every dessert on the menu.

That article is from October 2024?

Next week, Antler’s doors will close briefly as the team renovates and reinvigorates both the menu and the space.

“This is not a concept overhaul,” says Shapiro. “We want to continue exploring the ethos of Canadiana and the wild we’ve become known for, but we’re interested in expanding what that means—both to us and to the diner.”
Hopefully a Heritage Toronto plaque can be placed at the window to commemorate the history of the site

I went to Antler years ago.

The food was quite well done.

I find I'm going to restaurants less and less. And I've noticed it in my bank accounts, just yesterday I mentioned to the Mrs. that we seem to have more dosh.

I guess Rob Ford said it best, I have enough to eat at home.

Eating out has become way too expensive. I understand food prices, rent, etc. has gone up, but for us, the value of dining out vs the costs has been fairly lopsided for some time now; now we rarely go out dining at all.

Even Winterlicious/Summerlicious seems $$ to me.

I went to Duckworths in Scarborough last night as see in the attached.

It was $25.00 with taxes for an order of Halibut and Chips and Gravy. My folks also got 2 Halibut, 1 Chip, Gravy, Coleslaw and Ginger Ale.

For all of us, it came to $80.00 with tip.

I love going out to eat but it is much cheaper to cook at home now than it is to eat out. I went to McDonalds recently and paid $17.50 for a 10 nugget combo with large fries (inclusive of taxes). To me that is absolutely insane.

As a Brit, fish and chips is supposed to be poor man's grub. Now it's somehow become bougie. My near local now calls themselves fish bar, wtf is that?

Hallibut and chips for $26 before tax and tip?! GTFO. I'll stick to Captain Cookes, thank you very much.

Duckworths is expensive but they are really good at what they do. The Kingston Road location is far better than the Danforth Location which is a shell of what it once was.

You pay for what you get these days,

Overall, the chain restaurants are getting more expensive. Like I said it was $17.50 at McDonalds while A&W was almost the same price for less food.

I can get 1.8 kg of chicken breast at Walmart for $22, Rice-a-Roni for $2 and $6 dollars for veggies. That is $30 to feed a family of 4 healthier food than you would pay for 1.5 people eating out.
