Are you also so worked up about the names of all the new crosstown stations which the public had no say in. Or the renaming of Eglinton West which the public also had no say in.
Money is always an issue, that's why Sheppard is half the intended length, that's why Finch is half the intended length.
Eglinton as a subway would have been half as long as cost twice as much if Ford had his way.
And the cost probably would have killed the Ontario line.
The province / Metrolinx wants nothing to do with the WWLRT or EELRT and both will be 100% finance by the city if they get built with some hope that they will get some money from the federal government as well.
The trains are automatic in the tunnel, ie no driver the driver only takes over when they leave the tunnel is my understanding.

The cost difference between LRT and Subways in Toronto is 4.7x, Finch LRT per km compared to the Ontario Line per km, The Ontario line is using a lot of elevated sections and and GO right of way so most likely the difference is 5x+ to build a subway instead of an LRT. Finch West costs 3.7Billion...
