As of October 1, 2024, there were 280 cranes on buildings across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), according to UrbanToronto's UTPro tracking of construction projects.
This represents the sixth straight month where the total number of cranes has declined in the GTHA. This is an 11% drop from last report in July. From January 2024, there has been a 28% drop in the total number of cranes. As the number of units and the number of new construction projects has also continued to decline in the last year, we expect the total number of cranes to continue their downward trajectory into the winter months.
In terms of the total number of cranes in each region, Toronto continues its lead with 174, followed by Halton, Durham, and Peel with 28, 26, and 25, respectively.
All these cranes are helping build a total of 85,642 dwelling units (8.6% decline since last quarter), and more than 64 million ft² of gross floor area (a decline of 3 million ft² since last quarter). Of the 198 projects in the GTHA with active cranes, 131 are under construction with one crane, 54 have two, 11 have three, and only 2 have four or more cranes.
Out of the 198 projects with an active crane, 125 of them are in Toronto. Halton, Durham, and Peel and 19, 18, and 17 projects with at least one crane each, respectively.
