The gap in the streetscape, even before today's fire, was caused by a previous large fire on site back in April 2018:

Image and article from the Star:

Toronto Fire Services District Chief Stephan Powell said no one was found injured following a preliminary search of the three-storey building.

The fire caused severe damage to the building and its roof collapsed.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.

Plenty of room for a blank-slate tower now. Brad Lamb must be salivating.

Hope these buildings are on the registry, and that the city enforces the retention of the facades.

Now that it partially burnt down . The company should tear the part that looks the same all down. Then rebuild the facade identically as it used to look ! Because patch up jobs hardly ever come out good !

Unmindful of the roses,
Unmindful of the thorn,
A reaper tired reposes
Among his gathered corn
So might I, till the morn!

Cold as the cold Decembers,
Past as the days that set,
While only one remembers
And all the rest forget,
But one remembers yet.
