Let’s get that decking going!! Great update.

Thinking about that anti-elevated transit group that posted this picture. Hope the construction progress haunts them.

The pictures certainly show that there is a short-term intrusion by construction, but it can be quickly remediated afterwards. Far preferable to deep shafts to TBM-bored tunnels, which take longer to construct and impact more things for longer..

As a thought exercise, how much faster would crosstown west be completed if the majority of the expansion was above ground?

So long as any of it was underground, and especially if TBM's were used, the underground station and emergency exit shaft construction would likely take the longest to complete, and hence would define the critical path. Whether the underground portion is 20% or 60% might not matter.

But if the whole thing had been above ground, from Mount Dennis all the way to Renforth, then yeah.... it would be built faster.

You'd probably still need the tunnel from Mt Dennis to Pearen Park where it transitions to the elevated section, but that could happen concurrently with the elevated section (as it is). TBMs are pretty quick, as mentioned its the shaft and station construction which takes time. When this is complete it'll be interesting to compare the rate of TBM tunneling vs elevated section and also station construction speed. They have shaved some time by having the tunnel contractor complete the shoring for the station boxes.

IO Market Update - October 2025

What a long way we have come. Time for the next batch of projects to make it to active procurement. Sheppard Extension, EGW LRT Airport Extension, Ontario Line North Extension, EG LRT East Extension

Projects in Planning Phase: Transit
Hamilton LRT - Stops, Rail and Systems
Where in the document does it refer to Ontario Line North and EG LRT East extension?

Where in the document does it refer to Ontario Line North and EG LRT East extension?
It doesn’t refer to it directly, but it would make logical sense for those two projects to be included in Ford’s next transit expansion announcement. The Sheppard Extension and Eglinton West Airport Extension alone don’t seem substantial enough to represent the next major tranche of expansion projects. You could perhaps make the case for including the Waterfront LRT as well. Beyond the following, however, it’s unlikely that anything else will make the list:

  • Ontario Line North Extension
  • Eglinton East LRT Extension
  • Sheppard Extension
  • Eglinton West LRT Airport Extension
  • Waterfront LRT Extension
