I was looking fora thread that is a catch all for all transit within the GTA/Golden Horseshoe/Southern ON/GO catchment area and could not find one.

One thing that irks me about transit construction is how it is not done in a way that makes sense. For example, most projects area single phase, with some future phase, but that future phase is usually never done right after the under construction phase is complete. An example of this is the iON LRT. When it was completed, the phase further south to Cambridge should have had shovels in the ground within a year of the opening day. I know the Hurontario LRT is under construction and should be open in the next year or so. The northern extension should be announced sooner than later. They have had time to sort out their options. Interestingly Ottawa did what is right by opening their first phase of the LRT and construction on phase 2 began shortly thereafter. Hopefully by the time phase 2 wraps up, they follow with phase 3. Some may argue against this, but that argument becomes moot as I doubt anyone can say we have sufficient higher order transit.

Reece Martin (aka RMTransit) is quitting the YouTube game, it'll be a big loss for folks covering urban transit in Southern Ontario. I really hope that someone else can fill the void in that space, there's multiple big projects that will require much more public accountability and what's left of our news media does a poor job covering it.

Some of his views were odd. His GTA stuff was good, but outside of that, anything else did not sound quite on the mark. Some times, it was as simple as facts that can easily be verified through Wikipedia,or the transit authority website. Overall, though, I agree he will be missed for Southern ON.

With the introduction of Emergency (window) Hammers on public transport in North America, I found it interesting that others are starting to move away from them because they get stolen, even when alarmed.

Here is the alternative: SnapXit

Okay, do you have an article or something about them being stolen? Not that I don't believe you, but it just seems like a very odd thing to steal.

Not sure the best place for this, but the High Speed Rail Alliance hosted an interview with Stadler regarding their multiple unit train products for the train nerds here:

Russian railway company tests new train connection between St. Petersburg and Imatra – aiming for one million passengers per year

Russian railway company RZD brought a 349-seat Lastochka passenger train purchased for the Sochi Olympics to Imatra.

The purpose of the test train was to test what it would take to open a new train connection from St. Petersburg to Imatra. The train ran at a top speed of 160 km/h between St. Petersburg and Vyborg. In Vyborg, a diesel locomotive was attached to the front of the train, which pulled the carriages to Imatra, as electrification is missing from the rest of the line.

RZD Deputy Director Dmitry Pegov believes it is possible that traffic could start in a couple of years. The Finnish side estimates the year to be 2025.

- We would be ready to start immediately, as no technical problems were observed on this journey. But there is still a lot to do on both sides of the border, said Pegov.

The list of shortcomings includes, among other things, electrifying the line from Antrea, i.e. Kamenogorsk, to Imatra, a triangular track enabling journeys from Imatra to Lappeenranta, and modification work to be carried out at the Pelkola and Imatrankoski railway yards.

– But train traffic could be started quite quickly by having a simple platform for the train in Pelkola, near the Finnish-Russian border, where the Finnish side carries out official inspections, ponders Imatra City Mayor Kai Roslakka. One such platform was already built for the test train at Imatrankoski.

Airport train to Lappeenranta

The Russians have a vision of transporting almost a million passengers annually between St. Petersburg and Imatra. At that time, there would be three round-trip trains on the route daily, and the Lappeenranta Travel Centre could also be the final station.

– A travel chain would be formed so that passengers arriving in Lappeenranta by plane could get to St. Petersburg by train, says Mayor Roslakka.

Half of the train passengers would be Russian, a third Finnish and the rest, for example, Asian tourists.

A large part of passengers coming from Finland would cross the border with an e-visa. According to the Russian side, electronic inspection devices will be operational on trains by the middle of the decade.

– The price of a train ticket from St. Petersburg to Imatra would be around 15 euros, so many people would switch from cars to trains, says Timofei Shmanjov.

Russian project – general design ready in autumn

The new train connection from Imatra to St. Petersburg is a purely RZD project. The Russians have been proposing the opening of a new route for almost a decade, but so far it has not made much progress. The railway company's top management in Moscow has now set out to accelerate the project.

– We have known about the strong will and desire of the Russians to have a rail connection since the summer. They already have schedules planned for the trains, reminds Mayor Roslakka.

Trains would depart from Imatra at 9:25, 15:46 and 21:21. Correspondingly, departure times from St. Petersburg would be 7:00, 13:36 and 19:11. The movement of the trains has been adjusted to the Allegro schedules, because between St. Petersburg and Vyborg both trains use the same tracks.

- The general planning of the new connection is already underway on the Finnish side and will be completed by the end of the year, says Markku Nummelin.

RZD is a Russian railway company with almost a million employees. It transports around a billion passengers by rail every year. The company has almost 85,000 kilometers of track in use.

This seems arse backwards to me...

Just as Metrolinx/Presto are installing TVMs across the GTA, Helsinki is removing them. All TVMs will be permanently shut off on 12 May. First you could pay cash on a bus/tram/train to the driver/conductor, and get change. That was eliminated in favour of TVMs. Now that the new Conduent card readers are fully installed, which accept credit/debit/QR codes, the TVMs are being eliminated.

If you don't have a card, you're expected to use the TA's app. If you want to top-up your card in person, you'll be punished with a ~1 Euro surcharge, at their version of Shoppers/Circle K/grocery store.

This was approved in 2021.

Wonder when they'll start removing fareboxes over here...

Ps. Edmonton's TVMs are already cashless.
