Sadly, I feel that an extended, decidedly un-democratic period of complete martial law is the only way to fix that place.

Perhaps China should take the lead? 🤣

What's in it for them? The only value would be PR and maybe a future presence in the Caribbean (which it can get via Cuba) - it's not exactly known for resources: human or otherwise. On the other hand a unstable Haiti will probably serve the purpose of weakening the moral standing of the West (think the destablizing effects say migrants will have on North American politics), and a money/reputation sink should it get involved. On that basis, I doubt they will get involved beyond words.

If we want to help people, we should establish a program to bring in a large number of Haitian refugees into our country. That would help them, and be money well spent. Where are the people lined up behind that idea?

I am sure Legault/CAQ would be enamoured to the idea.

Except they don't want immigration, only guest workers. And people probably only want to move to Japan because of the cutesy Youtube videos that doesn't really fully communicate the difficulties of living there as a gaijin.

I occasionally watch some videos from Greg Lam, a Canadian documentary filmmaker who immigrated to Japan. He tends to give a bit more even handed impression of the cultural differences.
