Tory did get pretty mean and petty during the 2014, 2018 election and arguably in the 2022 election. The robocalls to get his picks onto council was unprecedented for a mayoral campaign, and in 2022 that’s how he spent nearly all the time. Remember that in 2018, his campaign was calling Layton, Cressy, and Wong-Tam “radical socialists.”

That seems pretty standard campaigning to highlight the oppositions political leanings. Getting friendly councilors elected is just smart.

I have been very critical of Matlow in the past but his early campaign talk is promising.

Tax increases are bold no matter how needed it is as is antagonizing the suburban commuters. Could work in the packed field.

Toronto is facing $46.5 billion in fiscal pressures over the next decade and the situation has become so dire that it is likely to threaten the city’s “fiscal stability and the sustainability of its service levels” without action, a new report is warning.

The report from Ernst & Young examined the city’s operating and capital requirements based on both its current level of service delivery and the level of service delivery expected to result from commitments already made by city council.

It found that the city is likely to face $16.9 billion in operating budget pressures between 2023 and 2032, as well as $33.6 billion in capital budget pressures.

I spend way too much time online and I noticed that Chow has been significantly more active on social media in recent weeks.

I'm not necessarily opposed to a high profile member of the old guard left, like a Peggy Nash or Peter Tabuns, running for mayor, but I think Chow's time has come and gone. She ran a poor mayoral campaign in 2014 and a misguided campaign to return to federal politics as an MP the following year.
